Seven graves were daubed with swastikas and inscrip- tions in German reading "Death to the Jews." After a short investiga- tion, the local police arrested two 17-year-olds, who ad- mitted they were the perpetrators. The two reportedly said they acted under the in- fluence of the racial violence in Germany. It was the fourth cemetery vandalism reported in France in recent weeks. Last week, a Jewish cemetery in Lyon was desecrated. Two weeks earlier, the cemetery of Herlishheim, in Alsace, was vandalized, many of its headstones broken. The in- vestigation into that desecration is still under way. In another incident, the synagogue of Saint-Avoid, in the same region, was torch- ed. The culprit, described by the police as an "outcast," was arrested a few hours after the arson attack. Sempliner Give a little piece of your --lean V GIVE TO THE TORCH DRIVE Jerusalem (JTA) — Although no formal agreements will be signed at the end of the visit of Hungarian President Arpad Goncz to Israel, relations between the two countries have deepened, Mr. Goncz told reporters this week. Mr. G-oncz visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem and then declared that the Holo- caust should never recur. His tour of Yad Vashem was extended, with the pres- ident stopping time and again by exhibits, receiving explanations by Yitzhak Arad, the Yad Vashem di- rector. "We are very, very deeply moved," he said, his eyes wet with tears, as he was standing at the Yizkor Hall. "This must never be re- peated." Visiting the Old City of Jerusalem, Mr. Goncz, who is also a playwright, said that he felt as if he was "in the middle of the time," with Jerusalem, creating the im- pression that it was "very, very old and very, very young at the same time. I feel in the same time in the history and in the 21st cen- tury."
