Enhancing relations with
I:rael should have no signifi-
cant downside. It is true the
nation's Muslims will not be
happy, but the issue is not a
major concern for them.
--)
- One thing that should be
,clear to the government is
that the Arab states are too
weak to punish India for
changing its policy. The na-
tions of Africa and Eastern
Europe have not suffered
i=fom their diplomatic ties to
Israel.
India learned this lesson
first-hand a few years ago
when it granted visas to an
Israeli tennis contingent. The
Arab League was furious and
,ranted the decision reversed.
The government held firm,
however, and the Israelis were
riot only allowed to play, but
were treated with the utmost
cordiality. The Arab League
did nothing to punish India
- nd no political damage was
incurred.
One concern India held
before the changes in the in-
ternational situation was
that Pakistan might benefit
from any tilt toward Israel.
The government correctly
decided this would not hap-
pen today. In addition, India
and Israel share an interest
in preventing Pakistan from
—eveloping a nuclear capabili-
ty and might work
cooperatively toward that
end.
Indirect benefits also are
likely to accrue from the shift
in Indian policy. Jews around
he world now can have a feel-
ing of goodwill toward the
country and be more inclined
to visit and generate tourist
income. In the United States,
Israel's supporters should no
longer feel compelled to focus
on India's hostility toward
Israel and may view the
enhancement of U.S.-India
relations More sympathet-

Hawaiian Jews
In Relief Efforts

San Francisco (JTA) —
Some of the areas hardest
hit by Hurricane Iniki in
Kauai are home to an
estimated 500 Jews.
Peter Freeman, president
of the Jewish Federation of
Hawaii, said he is planning
to send an envoy to Kauai,
90 miles northwest of Oahu
(where Honolulu is located),
as soon as state police allow
an opening on one of the few
airplanes scheduled to leave
for the small island from
Honolulu. But, My. Freeman
cautioned, that could take
several days.
