next three years.
The model, therefore, must
_ivolve a two-track approach:
improving school facilities
and encouraging Bedouin
parents and community
members to take a more ac-
tive role in the education of
their children. Efforts include
.eveloping basic language
skills supplemented by career
counseling, encouraging
after-school activities to in-
terest young people in school
and a vocation, and teaching
parents how to offer support
t,9 their children.
Volunteerism is a vital part
of the program, as Dr. Abu
Saad discovered when
visiting the Pascua Yaqui
reservation in Arizona to ex-
change ideas with tribal
chiefs and officials. "The Ya-
qui tribe face similar pro-
blems to the Bedouin and
their school drop-out rate is
even higher," explains Dr.
aad.

Beyond keeping
Bedouin children in
school is the
problem of getting
them there in the
first place.

Two American Indian
graduate students spent one
month this summer living in
a Bedouin township and
observing the Bedouin way of
life. Two Bedouin students
from Ben-Gurion University
of the Negev will then spend
One month in the Pascua Ya-
qui community in Arizona.
This year Dr. Octaviana
Trujille, director of the
University of Arizona's In-
dian Center, returned Dr.
Saad's visit and met with
Bedouin chiefs at Ben-Gurion
University as well as in the
Bedouin town of Rahat. They
witnessed first hand the dif-
ficulties of the Bedouin ad-
justing to an urban way of
life: beside their newly-built
houses, many families have
erected traditional tents
where they gather to sip bit-
ter coffee or sweet tea.
Beyond keeping Bedouin
children in school is the pro-
blem of getting them there in
-the first place. The move from
goatskin
tents to houses in
1,
government-built townships,
has resulted in Bedouin
families facing increased
household costs. "Of course I
would like my children to
finish high school and go to
university," admitted Majboul
Elabid, a former Israel army
scout and father of 20
children. "But I can't afford
it." ❑
