Birger

entailed inevitable sacrifices:
"I gave up my profession, my
social life and countless ac-
tivities which I would have
loved to pursue."
During the Gulf War, when
many organizations closed or
functioned part-time, Ms.
Birger kept the children's
clinic open by appealing for
help on French Jewish radio
stations — an appeal which
met with an immediate
response by six French den-
tists. "Dental Volunteers for
Israel is booked for the next
two years," notes Ms. Birger
proudly, though she admits
an open disappointment at
the fact that only 10 percent
of the volunteers are Jewish.
"I cannot expect Israeli den-
tists to take part in the pro-
gram since they already have
lengthy reserve duties. But I
believe that Diaspora Jews
have an obligation to help;
they can do their own form of
military service by corning to
work for two weeks in our
clinic."
Ms. Birger's recently com-
pleted autobiography will no
doubt help to attract more
volunteers and much needed
funds to her program. The
book has already been
published in Hebrew, Ger-
man, Dutch and Finnish, and
the English language edition
is due out this fall with a film
to follow. Actress Meryl
Streep has been selected for
the part of Trudi's mother
and casting will soon be
under way to find a suitable
actress to play the part of
Trudi, the brave young girl
who survived the Holocaust
and went on to become the
devoted mother of Jerusa-
lem's needy children. ❑

Rabin Talks
Compromise
Jerusalem (JTA) — Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin has
stepped up signals that
Israel is ready for territorial
compromise on the Golan
Heights.
But he is insisting that
Syria commit itself to a
peace treaty with Israel
before he agrees to discuss
any withdrawal from the
strategic plateau.
• In an interview last week
with Israel Radio, Mr. Rabin
declared: "We have said that
in exchange for a peace trea-
ty that promises an end to
war and opens the borders
between Syria and Israel.
"This imposes, of course,
some sort of territorial com-
promise," he said.
