A magna-cum-laughter

Mr. Lawrence has always
'been a funny guy, even when
his high school classmates in
he Bronx knew him as
Manny Miller.
"Comedy was always it,"
says the 59-year-old Mr.
Lawrence.
– Not that there weren't
other interests as well. "I
, also wanted to dance. I took
'ballet lessons at one time,"
says Mal Lawrence, who had
a Walter Mitty fantasy of
becoming a comedy/dance
man like Danny Kaye.
Mr. Lawrence sidestepped
that ambition when, in the
early '50s, he discovered
what a gas comedy could be.
"I was working at my
. brother-in-law's gas station
and doing comedy for the
customers," he recalls.
The customers couldn't get
their fill. "Business
quadrupled while I worked
there," recalls the comedian.
He teamed up with funny
friend Joel List in the Army,

and the two wound up on the
"Ed Sullivan All-Army
Show" in 1954, each earning
$100.
Mr. Lawrence's earnings
have increased considerably
since, thanks to his pop-
ularity in the Catskills and
in clubs around the country.
If audiences eat up his
humor, much has to do with
his refreshing takes on fress-
-ing, or fervent noshing.
'Do you know what a 'for
dater' bag is?" he asks
devilishly. "That's the bag
. you put the Danish in that
you can't eat now so you can
have it 'for later.' Of course,
later may be a year from
now. But there it'll be."
And there is Mal
Lawrence, making his au-
diences laugh.
"You don't have to be Jew-
ish to appreciate this kind of
humor," says Lawrence.
"All ethnic people and food
-go together."
Happily married for 12
years, and with a puppy
named Midnight as a source
of pride, Mal Lawrence
doesn't mind time going by.
But isn't comedy a matter
of — timing? "Everything is
a matter of timing," says the
comedian whose Catskills
clock is ticking with the
sounds of success. El_
