ex-y and savvy, stalk-
ing the stage like a
lover on the precipice
of seduction, Mal Z.
Lawrence strikes while it's
hot.
Mr. Lawrence is one hot
comedian these days. As one
of the shining stars of Cat-
skillson Broadway, he
"shticks" it to his audience
every night with tales of
munching mountain mei_ .
that would make Davy
Crockett sign up for tht,
American plan.
The mountain men — and
women — Mr. Lawrence
lampoons are those au-
diences/diners who have
flocked to the Catskills
resort area for years in sear-
ch of the perfect combo: lox
on bagel with a side of wry
humor.
Mal Lawrence doesn't
resort to profanity to pro-
voke laughter. He puts the
spotlight on the battle bet-
ween men and women,
highlighting the skirmishes
that stem from their
natural-born differences.
Why is a man satisfied ,.
with taking one suit on a'
weekend getaway while his
wife can't get away with
packing less than a cedar
chest? The packed audiences
greeting Mr. Lawrence with
laughter each night at the
Lunt-Fontanne Theatre
must wonder, too, marveling
at this hip, pony-tailed comic
with hair-trigger timing.
Sharing the stage with
comedic colleagues Freddie
Roman, Dick Capri and
Marilyn Michaels, Mal
Lawrence is a name to be
reckoned with when one
Michael Elkin is entertain-
ment editor of the Jewish Ex-
ponent in. Philadelphia.
