My Father star David
Margulies is conver-
sant with success.
The veteran actor has
made numerous Broadway
appearances, including
Brighton Beach Memoirs The
Iceman Cometh, with James
Earl Jones, and Comedians.
He has also appeared in a
number of feature films,
such as All That Jazz aria
Running on Empty.
Right now, many are
commenting on his outstan-
ding portrayal of an old
Yiddish actor entering the
final stages of his life in
His Zaretsky is one of the
many characters who people
the stage of the Royale
Theatre in Herb Gardner's
bittersweet drama about a
Jewish father-son relation-
ship and the circle of friendu
who enter their erratic orbit.
Judd Hirsch's edgy Eddie
is a father with a blistered
soul, an embittered barkeep

demons who have dashed his
dreams of success. He is --,
"Father Knows Best" fueled

cantankerous self-hater who
finds his religion at once
repulsive and riveting.
In Zaretsky, a boarder at
the bar owner's home, Eddie,
meets his inverse image, a 1
man who would rather image

its pain.
"Clearly in Judd, Herb has
found a real voice for his
work," says Mr. Margulies
of the actor and author who'
have teamed together on two
other plays: A Thousand 1
Clowns and I'm not Rappa-
port.
While he isn't Zaretsky —
in reality, the likable Mr.
Margulies is much younger
than his aging theatrical
alter ego — the character is
no stranger to the actor.
Zaretsky is a combination of
two prominent performers:
Yiddish stage titan Joseph
Buloff and actor Joseph
Wiseman, says Mr.
Margulies.
The character of Zaretsky
speaks to Mr. Margulies, as
does the writer who created
him. "Herb and I are both
