am trying to do now," says

laborative effort a musical

Nov, he says, if a Potok
play fails, it's time to call
"Author! Author!" "If it
doesn't work, it's my own
fault," he says.
Books have their benefits,
says Chaim Potok, but
theater is not without its
pluses. Each demands a diff-
erent imagination.
A pragmatist, Mr. Potok
says he would like to imag-
ine a better world, but bad
news always seems to be
making headway and
headlines in this country.
"It seems that there is an
-insensitivity to normal
values now," he laments of a
society he sees as turning its
back on the need for
students to study, read and
confront hard work.
Mr. Potok doesn't back off
from criticizing the Jewish
community either. That
community, he says, is not
immune to the same prob-
lems afflicting others.
Potok has no problem
doing two projects at once.
,Indeed, even as he awaits
the production of Lights,he is
talking about the forthcom-
ing publication of his new
book, I Am the Clay.
