shades of chalk. She also
began doing paintings of the
desert, bathed in soft, yellow
light.
During her lifetime, Ms.
Ticho made frequent trips to
Europe and America and held
major solo exhibitions in
leading galleries in Amster-
dam, Baltimore, Chicago, Rot-
terdam, New York and Ox-
ford, as well as in Israel; and
her work is represented in
prestigious collections all
over the world. She was
awarded the Art Prize of the
City of Jerusalem in 1965,
honorary citizenship of the ci-
ty in 1970 and in 1980, just
prior to her death, she won
the coveted Israel Prize.
Situated in HaRav Kook
Street in the center of town,
Anna's home, during her
lifetime, became the favored
salon of the artistic and
literary community of the ci-
ty. On her death, she be-
queathed her house, along
with her art collections and
library, to the people of
Jerusalem as a token of her
love for the city. Administered
by the Israel Museum, Ticho
House has a restaurant, a
gallery of her paintings and
drawings, a shop, and a
Garden that is often the venue
of twilight concerts.
But what Anna Ticho real-
ly bequeathed us was the
character of the Jerusalem
landscape, with which she fell
in love eight decades ago.
Through her eyes, we can en-
joy the dignity and grandeur
of the timeless Judean hills,
unchanged and unchang-
ing.
