PERFECT LIFE — A SWEAT SHOP
AEROBICS AT ITS BEST!

' south, a painful handicap has
been turned into profits. On
their premises is an old well,
long abandoned because its
waters were too saline for
either drinking or irrigation.
Further exploration has
revealed a thermal spring
with heavy mineral content
not unlike the health springs
in the Dead Sea area. With a
minimum investment the
kibbutz has set up a "health
farm," and people flock there
for treatment with the waters
and the mud packs. Advertis-
ing is not needed, for the fame
of the place has spread by
word of mouth, and they are
frequently packed to capacity.
Urban families who want to
take their children for a well-
rounded all-day trip can go to
Nir Eliyahu, where the ex-
pedition is conducted in a
donkey-drawn cart, visiting
the various aspects of kibbutz
life, including the animal cor-
ners, presence at a milking
session, a puppet show, and a
healthy kibbutz lunch on the
lawn. The "Day at a Kibbutz"
is offered at a reasonable
price.
Passover should be a pro-
fitable period. Whereas
thdusands used to go to a kib-
butz to spend the seder with
relatives there, the business
managers of many collectives
now make a charge per plate.
The fishermen of Israel now
have numerous ponds into
which to cast their lines for a
fee, among them Maagan
Michael, Maayan Zevi and
Afek.
Even more original is the
idea at Netiv HaLamed Heh
to go into the cemetery
business. They have been
negotiating with a Reform
Judaism group to open a
private cemetery on a com-
merical basis, not linked to
Orthodox rites. There have
been technical problems, but
the kibbutz has not given up.

"It's not such a bad idea to
raise marble slabs, instead of
cotton," they say.

Kibbutzim generally are
not happy when their youth
go to the big cities for night
life, but what's wrong with
bringing the night life to the
kibbutz? Almost all of them
have set up pubs, and more
and more are beginning to
welcome urban youth to come.

The younger members,
who now carry the economic
burden of making the collec-
tive a viable operation, insist
that there has been no
sacrifice in values. They re-
tain their socialist way of life
internally, they say, but adopt
capitalistic methods in their
necessary contacts with the
outside world. ❑
