in The Kibbutz

T

he initiative and origi-
nality being shown by
kibbutzim in their
search for new sources of in-
come know no bounds. Last
year we reported that many of
the collective settlements,
burdened by heavy debts,
had, in capitalistic style,
opened "businesses" on their
premises, ranging all the way
from catering to weddings,
bar mitzvahs and the like at
the kibbutz, to conducting
music festivals. Some had
opened their fish ponds to
eager anglers; others had sold
memberships in country
clubs, utilizing kibbutz
facilities. Those located not
far from cities had found that
day care centers for children
could be quite lucrative.
The list continues to grow,
as kibbutzim show increased
resourcefulness and imagina-
tion. One of the more radical

trained for the purpose. Thus,
Kibbutz Yifat has a lawyer's
office, catering to clients from
far and wide. An economist at
Kibbutz Yavneh has a suc-
cessful economics counseling
service. Ain Harod does well
with its graphic artists, and
finds that while 40 percent of
its clients are from other kib-
butzim, the remainder are
from the city. Kibbutz Gaaton
runs a public relations service
and advertises itself as the
only PR firm in Israel with its
own cowshed.
Bet Hashitta goes even fur-
ther. The literary creativity of
its members has led it into an
unusual field. For a suitable
fee, one can have his
biography written up in
detail, printed, bound and
published. It. is even possible
to order a surprise volume for
someone as a unique gift for
the man or woman who has
everything else.
A partnership between a
kibbutz and American in-
vestors will soon have Israelis
eating American style bagels.
Lender's Bagel, which claims
to produce about 80 percent of
the frozen bagels consumed in
the U.S., is now setting up its
plant at Mishmar Hasharon
on a 50-50 basis with the
kibbutz.
At Kibbutz Sdeh Yoav, down
