Many Jews don't eat nutl
during the 10 days beginning
at Rosh Hashanah and exten-
ding through Yom Kippur
because the Hebrew word for
nut, egoz, is numerically
equivalent to that for "tran-
sgression," het. Jews hay:-
long symbolically further
separated themselves from
sin during the days of judg-
ment by not eating nuts. Ex-
tending this thinking to in-
clude all foods referred to in
English as "nuts," led to an
avoidance of peanut products.
Peanuts are high fiber,
cholesterol-free and more
protein-rich than eggs, daiu,
and many cuts of meat and
fish. Now the Yamin Noraim
will no longer require absten-
tion from that American
staple food, peanut butter;
nor from the world's most ver-
satile cooking fat, peanut oil.
Ground peas are the perfect
vehicle for honey, the
sweetener traditionally used
to welcome the New Year. Us-
ing these recipes the Rosh
Hashanah blessing, "May it
be your will to renew us for a,
year that is good and sweet,"
would be appropriate at
almost any course!
