Artist Sandi Knell Tamny
will celebrate the spirit and
resolve of the Sephardic Jews
from Spain with a collection
of sculpture titled The
Chosen Sept. 13-Oct. 28 at
the Canton Art Institute,
Canton, Ohio.
The Chosen consists of 27
larger-than-lifesize figures,
representing the generations
of displaced Jews, between
1492 and 1992. The work uses
the lives of 26 real persons,
Dsuch as writer Emma
Lazaras, Supreme Court
Justice Benjamin Cardozo,
and philosopher Baruch
Spinoza, to trace the Sephar-
dic immigration around the
world. The work is more a
celebration of the human
spirit than a tribute to those
molested by the Inquisition
itself. Each figure features
text outlining the life and ac-
complishment of the person.
