- "••mmil TRAVEL re creating sweet sounds. are _ Further on, there's a display of colorful and exotic African ;Th=naasks. There are handmade leather bracelets and silver earrings of all sorts. In fact, there is an abundance of `iland-crafted jewelry, especial- ly the silver that the Israelis favor. While people look at all of this, a young woman seated near a tree strums her guitar. A street corner artist creates portrait of a young Israeli who sits very still as people w=atch the work in progress. Others sit at outdoor tables at the cafes that line the street, taking a break as they watch the passing parade. What a parade! It includes soldiers in their uniforms, -parents with young kids in tow, sabras talking in rapid- fire Hebrew, tourists speak- ing many languages and serious shoppers who come here because by buying directly from the artist, they cn.n get far better prices than in retail shops or studios. "The prices are half what they are in the shops," says Naama Sela, who is selling silver earrings, many with semi-precious stones, that she and her mother make by hand. Born on a kibbutz, she mov- ed to Tel Aviv five years ago, nd has been exhibiting her jewelry at this booth for six months. "I made a lot of friends just by meeting people right here," she says. ,. It's easy to see why. As peo- pie stop to look at the wares, they talk to the vendors and also to one another. Tel Aviv is a friendly city to begin with, and it's especially easy to strike up a conversation in the informal atmosphere of an outdoor fair. Moreover, this setting is far easier for non-Hebrew speak- ing tourists than other Israeli markets. At the larger and more boisterous Carmel Market, for instance, very few C:: the vendors speak English and it's almost too noisy for conversation anyway. But at this outdoor market, most of the craftspeople can handle English, and what's more, they are patient and fi iendly to tourists. At Naama Sela's booth, for example, several teen-age girls have stopped to try on one pair of earrings after another. They ask for a mir- ror, try on more pairs of earr- ings — and then walk off without buying a thing. Those customers clearly en- joy the lively ambiance of this fair, the creativity of the wares — and the bargain prices, too. ❑ I - NOT ALL TRAVEL AGENTS ARE CREATED EQUAL! : V D MOTOR COACH TOURS 13 YEARS EXPERIENCE! * WE HAVE CONSUMER BANKRUPTCY INSURANCE * Protect Yourself & Demand Proof Before Booking Any Trip! * * *"PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" * * *Toronto, Best Seats! * Weekends thru Jan.. . .$255* WASHINGTON, D.C. & GETTYSBURG * * Bee Kalt Travel * * MACKINAC ISLAND FALL COLOR * $239 * * Oct. 9-11 * Hotel • Meals • Ferry • Lunch * * Grand Hotel • Carriage Tour * * * * * STRATFORD FESTIVAL * *Oct. 28 $49 * * "Romeo & Juliet" * WASHINGTON D.C., WILLIAMSBURG, * * GETTYSBURG, SHENANDOAH * $567 * * Oct. 8-14 * Both including: • Hotels • Meals* * • Tours • Much More! * * "MISS SAIGON" — CHICAGO * .
