$ALE OF THE (1/4) CENTURY!
her husband was trans-
ferred, but soon after settl-
ing in the Lone Star State
she dropped him. "I didn't
like my husband," Ms.
Goldstein said. "So I got
divorced."
It was there, in a Dallas
-.bathtub, that the whole dis-
count dream was born.
"I was 30 and a single
parent and no car and no
job," she said. "I decided one
day while I was in the
'' bathtub that I wanted to
— have a Cadillac."
A friend introduced Ms.
> . Goldstein to samples. She
found terrific clothes, many
of them actually ahead of
season, at half the price.
Good deals, she soon
discovered, could be found
everywhere — it was just a
matter of looking. So Ms.
Goldstein got a partner who
had a car, and in 1972 the
two published the first
Underground Shopper,
"with no money, but we
prayed a lot." It sold 5,000
copies the first day.
Shopper editions soon
came out in Detroit,
Houston, Seattle and San
Francisco. With them came
fame and fortune, which Ms.
Goldstein could use to buy
yet more affordable finds ("I
\---) don't pay retail for
anything," she insists). She
had newspaper columns, was
a guest on every talk show
1
from Phil Donahue to Oprah
Winfrey, and published book
after book.
Ms. Goldstein also opened
a spa — half-price, of course
— that even offered
massages for pets. But even-
tually it closed. "The spa
business is tough," Ms.
‘,=.
Goldstein said. Today, the
I
D
former spa is an eating dis-
order clinic.
Though scouring the
streets for discounts remains
her No. 1 job, Ms. Goldstein
said her ultimate dream is to
open a retirement commun-
ity for women growing old
alone. She also plans to
write her autobiography to
be made into a movie, about
which Ms. Goldstein already
has definite ideas. Suzanne
Pleshette would be good in
the plum part of protagonist,
she said. "But the lead
definitely would not be
played by Roseanne
Barr."
