Center Creates
Expo Exhibit

Paris (JTA) - The Simon
Wiesenthal Center spon-
sored a "Day for Tolerance"
at Expo '92 in Seville, Spain.
In cooperation with the
Pavilion of the European
Communities, Sept. 10 was
declared "A Day for
Tolerance - The Holocaust
as a Warning" at the
World's Fair in Seville.
Through Tele-Expo, the
Simon Wiesenthal Center
addressed the international
public attending Expo '92,
calling for a "pause to con-
sider the dangers to democ-
racy of increasing racial pre-
judice and intolerance in
Europe."
Shimon Samuels, director
of the Wiesenthal Center's
European office, opened its
40-panel Holocaust exhibit,
"The Courage to Re-
member," and urged opinion
leaders "to recall what may
happen when, in
socioeconomic crisis,
democracies do not defend
themselves against ex-
tremists bent upon their
destruction."

Budapest (JTA) - Israel's
ambassador to Hungary said
this week that the anti-
Semitic views of a leading
Hungarian lawmaker
recalled the period of Adolf
Hitler's rise to power in the
1930s.
Speaking at a ceremony
honoring 19 Hungarians
who helped save Jews dui--
ing World War II, David
Kraus condemned the views
put forward by Istvan
Csui-ka, deputy head of the
country's ruling political
party, the Hungarian Dem-
ocratic Forum.
Mr. Csurka has openly
criticized Jews, warning
that the "dwarf minority" is
threatening to take over
Hungary. His views have
been carried in Magyar
Forum, the newspaper of the
Democratic Forum, and in a
regularly scheduled radio
program.
Mr. Kraus spoke at a
ceremony at the Budapest
Jewish Community Center
recognizing non-Jewish
Hungarians who helped
Jews during the Holocaust.
Earlier this month, U.S.
Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., a
Hungarian-born Jew, warn-
ed during a visit here that
American help might be cut
off and tourist contacts en-
dangered if Hungary ac-
cepted Csurka's beliefs.
