Tough Senate Race in Midwest The fact that hard work and persistence can pay off in politics was demonstrated last week when Russ Fe- ingold handily defeated two better-known opponents for the right to challenge GOP Sen. Bob Kasten in Wiscon- sin's November general elec- tion. Because of the state sena- tor's stunning victory — only a week before the primary, polls showed him running a distant third — the pro-Israel community will face one of those ex- cruciating choices created by single-issue politics. Democratic frontrunners Rep. Jim Moody and busi- nessman Joe Checota waged a ferocious — and ruinously expensive campaign — against each other. Possibly accounting for Mr. Fe- ingold's victory was his per- sistence: He began running for the senate seat more than three years ago. In interviews earlier this year, Mr. Feingold, who is Jewish, conceded that Sen. Kasten has been a strong friend of Israel. But he argued that the conservative legislator's views on such domestic issues as church- state separation, abortion and civil rights conflict with the views of most Jewish voters. A quick survey of pro- Israel political action com- mittees indicated that Mr. Kasten's incumbency, his key committee positions and his outspoken support for Israel will guarantee him overwhelming support from pro-Israel PACs. But Mr. Feingold's dra - matic dark horse victory may make his candidacy at- tractive to individual Jewish contributors who prefer his more progressive domestic agenda.
