"workers' government to im-
plement a socialist program,
to totally reorganize society
in the interests of the work-
ing people."
Established in 1966, the
party's Middle East policy
calls for "the unity of
Jewish, Palestinian and all
workers to establish the
United Socialist States of
the Middle East."
The Worker's World Party
and Workers League would
likely be considered exactly
what's wrong with this
country in the eyes of the
Tisch Independent Citizens
Party, established in May
1982.
The name comes from for-
mer gubernatorial candidate
Bob Tisch (he lost to James
Blanchard). Last year, the
Tisch Party joined forces
with the U.S. Taxpayers'
Alliance, headed by Howard
Phillips of Vienna, Va., who
now serves as Tisch's presi-
dential candidate.
Mr. Phillips — his cam-
paign number is 1-800-2-
VETO-IRS — is the kind of
politician who makes Pat
Buchanan look like a panty-
waist liberal. His platform
is replete with the word
"no." No abortion, no gun
control, no to the United
Nations, no to the World
Bank, no "bailout of
Gorbachev," no federally-
funded education, no "envi-
ronmental extremism," no
welfare and no "pro-homo-
sexual subsidies and regu-
lations."
And no foreign aid.
"It's not that we're anti-
Israel or anti-India," Mr.
Phillips said. "We simply be-
lieve that asking American
taxpayers to pay foreign aid
is unconstitutional. Just be-
cause countries stand for
democratic values doesn't
mean the American taxpay-
er is required to subsidize
them."
A Massachusetts native,
Mr. Phillips is the former
head of the U.S. Office of
Economic Opportunity and
has "fought for victory over
communism all over the
world," he writes.
"Our goal," he says, is "to
launch a new political par-
ty which advances principles
and policy objectives consis-
tent with the Bible and the
Constitution of the United
States."
Complaints about the tax-
man are not limited to the
Tisch Party.
"My Country "Ilis of Thee
— Without the IRS" could be
the national anthem of the
Libertarians. Their 1992
platform: Repeal the income
tax and dump the IRS.
The Libertarian Party's
presidential candidate thi-.D
year is Andre Marrou. A
graduate of MIT, he was
elected in 1984 to the Alaska
State Legislature. The vice
presidential hopeful is
Nancy Lord, an attorney
who specializes in medical-
legal and constitutional is-
sues.
The party advocates le-
galizing drugs and opposes
gun control in the belief that
government's role is not to
interfere in the private lives
of citizens. Government
should be there to protect

,
civil rights and provide na-
tional defense, but have no
involvement in education,
agriculture, trade or manu-
facturing. Libertarians' ral -
lying cry is "freedom." This
means freedom to choose
abortion and not to wear
seat belts, and freedom from
paying any kind of foreign
aid.
Libertarians support sep-
aration of church and staf-
and oppose national health
insurance programs.
TAKE THIS TEST! reads
a front-page headline on
Liberty Today, the Liber-
tarian Party's newspaper.
You score high — i.e., Liber-
tarian
tarian — if you agree with
any of the following: 1) No
draft or compulsory regis-J-
tration 2) Government
should keep hands off radio
and TV program content 3)
Government should not in-
terfere in sex conduct be-
tween consenting adults.
Not surprisingly, a good
number of Libertarian pub-
lications decry taxes, though
recent issues of Liberty
Today and The Truth, a
Libertarian publication
based in Ionia, also address
such topics as the problem
with television and "Are
Libertarians Religious Peo-
ple?" (The answer: yes, of
course).
The Libertarian Party
claims to be America's "third
largest and fastest growing ,
party." According to their
brochure, Libertarians hav3
elected more than 100 can-
didates and polled 5 million
votes in 1990.
