DISC DISEASE
Continued from Page 1
The spinal discs are cartilage pads which sit between the
vertebra and provide most of the flexibility to the spine. Without
the discs, the spine would be a rigid column of bone not capable
of bending.
The mobility that the spinal discs add to the spinal column
is, however, not without some drawbacks. By being soft and
therefore flexible, the spinal discs are prone to "wear" with time
and aging.
Researchers from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at
George Washington University found abnormal discs on CAT
scans in 35% of all age groups.
A slipped or herniated disc is perhaps the most common reason for which people
have back surgery. Fortunately, other treatment alternatives such as chiropractic
manipulation are available for the treatment of disc disorders. Two recent studies com-
paring manipulation to other non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy found
manipulation to be superior in treating back pain related to the disc. Many patients
receiving this type of treatment will be able to avoid difficult back surgery.
Anyone with back or leg pain should have a chiropractic evaluation for a disc
disorder. Many will find that chiropractic treatment will be the answer to this difficult
and common problem.

tion in recidivism," Mr.
Boxerman said.
Similarly, meditating al-
lows today's students to be
"free of stress" 'so they may
achieve academic excellence,
while health-care costs will
diminish (after patients get
a healthy dose of TM) with
the reduction of stress, "a
major aggravator of about
80 percent of all diseases."
The party's goal is to get
TM programs instituted
wherever possible.
That TM can cure the
economy and crime "is based
on scientific proof," Mr.
Boxerman said. "The Nat-
ural Law Party advocates
using science as an objective
measure of what will and
will not work."
The Natural Law Party —
which eschews headquar-
ters in stress-riddled Wash-
ington, D.C., for the likes of
Fairfield, Iowa, (home of
Maharishi International
University) — does not have
a specific plan for Middle
East peace. What adherents
would like is for the United
States to play a role of
"nourishment and friend-
ship to all nations," Mr.
Boxerman said.
"But our first goal must
be to strengthen the coher-
ence and integrity of the
United States," he added. "A
nation must have confidence
in itself' before attempting
to deal with problems in
other countries.
At present, the Natural
Law Party is running a
presidential candidate and
is on the ballot in 20 states,
Mr. Boxerman said, adding,
"We expect to be on 40 by
November."
Jerry Goldberg has done
a lot of meditating in his life,
but it has nothing to do with
TM. A representative of the
Worker's World Party, Mr.
Goldberg focuses his
thoughts instead on the
writings of Karl Marx.
The Worker's World
Party, with some 1,000 sup-
porters nationwide, is a
Marxist party that is anti-
capitalism, anti-Zionism.
The local office is located in
downtown Detroit, in an un-
marked building on Grand
River.
Mr. Goldberg describes
Israel as "a colonial power"
and the puppet of American
imperialism. He said his
party does not support loan
guarantees to Israel because
"that land belongs to the
Palestinians."
The
Libertarian
Party
Represents
You!
A rallying cry of "freedom."
Fighting for the struggle
of oppressed people every-
where is the platform of thn
Worker's World Party, ac-
cording to Mr. Goldberg.
The party is pro-choice and
against foreign aid to Israel,
but not against foreign aid
across the board. "Helpinp.
the ANC (African Nation
Congress) — that's the kin
of foreign aid we believe in,
he said. cr.
Mr. Goldberg said his par:
ty's goal is "the transforms=
tion of society" into
socialist confederation.
Socialism also is the ob=1
jective of the Workers
League, a Trotskyite party
running a presidential can
didate — Helen Halyard, 41,
— and "fighting for the indC.-
pendent political mobilizes-
tion of the working class
against the two big busine7;
parties — Democrats and
Republicans — and their 1,
policies of depression, na-
tionalism and war."
"Implacably opposed to al-1
forms of chauvinism and na-
tionalism being pumped out
by the capitalist class and
the trade union bureaucra-
cy to divide the workin-g
class," those Workers in the ,
League also are against
anti-Semitism and Zionism
both of which, Ms. Halyard
says, "seek to incite racial
hatred to divide Jewish
workers from their fellow
workers worldwide."
The Workers League sup-
ports the formation of a so-
cialist labor party,
