come would be considerably
less than that of teachers
elsewhere."
Why? Is the mission of the
Jewish educator so insignifi-
c-mt? Is our training and
dedication inferior to that of
other teachers? Is the cost of
goods reduced for those of us
who devote our lives to rais-
ing the next generation of
Jewish leaders? .. .
Now that Hillel is a
flourishing school, with a
growing enrollment ex-
ceeding 600 students, the
time has come for the
teachers to partake in the
fruits of their labor, and to be
appropriately paid. We can no
longer afford to lag behind
other teachers in the tri-
county area.
The gap between us is
about $25,000 and is growing
wider with every contract.
The teachers, not the building
its operation, must become
a top priority!
The school board tells us
that they have a financial pro-
blem due to tuition allow-
ances. Grants have to be
given to needy families and
tl)ward the education of the
new Americans.
We welcome the new
Americans with open arms.
God knows they have suffered
enough because of their
Jewishness, and need not suf-
fer any more.
Hillel teachers extend their
:'most dedication and con-
cern to all the students. But
nowhere in any bylaws does it
state that Hillel's fifty-some
teachers have to carry the
financial burden of the
$250,000 it costs to educate
the fifty-some new
Americans. These young peo-
ple should not become the
scapegoats of the budgetary
--reality of Hillel, nor the
financial responsibility of the
- teachers.
Proverb 22:22 says: "Do not
take from the poor, since s/he
is already poor." We, the Hillel
teachers, are already under-
paid. Do not burden each and
every one of us with the tab
for the education of those
newcomers who are the com-
munity's responsibility .. .
Sooner or later, those in
leadership positions will
realize that the future of
Judaism is in education, and
will put their money where
the future is.
