A Fresh, New Approach
For An Old Berkley Stand-by

W

hen new owners
take over an estab-
lished restaurant
that has gone downhill, it is
extremely important for a
fresh, new taste to be given.
Not taste as in food,
although that is significant.
The main thing in so many
instances is that cleanliness
has returned . . . no freshen-
up job, but complete eradica-
tion needed to restore a clean
setting of the highest degree.
Also important is that the
restaurant takes on a better
look and the service that may
have faltered is highly
upgraded.
Restaurateurs who attend
to these matters in taking
over a previously downtrod-
den restaurant stand a good
chance for success because
former customers will come
back again as well as new
faces.
This is what has happened
at the former Dominico's of 33
years on Coolidge, south of 12
Mile in Berkley . . . Now call-
ed David's Family Dining, the
look is amazingly different
. . . The place shines like a
new piece of metal in the sun.
David and Brenda Lugjuraj
are deeply dedicated to the
assurance of a complete
changeover, which is good .. .
It's not likely that days will
go by again without
something different being
done to continually enhance
the new David's Family
Dining.
Not to say that the former
Dominico's was never a place
to go . . . When it first open-
ed and for a number of years
after, it retained a popularity
semblance . . . not a big one,
but enough to satisfy a
minority.
David and Brenda have
enhanced the menu quite a
bit . . . Instead of just Italian,
the personable couple also
serve Greek and American in
a completely remodeled at-
mosphere that now seats 200
. . . A banquet room has space
for 120 more plus a pleasant
lounge area with nine bar
stools and three two-top
tables.
No more squinting when
entering the restaurant .. .
There's light now and roses in
bud vases adorn each table
. . . David's is like a family
restaurant should be with
large portions, low prices and
a very diversified menu of
seven veal entrees, nine
pastas, 10 seafoods, seven

steaks and chops, 11 sand-
wiches, pizzas galore, four
homemade soups, 23 Greek
specialties and nine Greek
appetizers, four salads, etc.
What used to be strictly a
pizzeria operation with a
small menu is today a
restaurant of dining versatili-
ty . . . And this is where good
chefs also come in . . . When
he was 7-years-old, Dennis
Spavale was a pasta boy for
Mario Lelli at Mario's on Se-
cond Boulevard . . . After nine
years there, he toured the
country club circuit 10 years
. . .
Franklin
Hills,
Knollwood, Oakland Hills,
Red Run . . . Lunchtime chef
Robert Bryant was formerly
with Golden Mushroom
before going to North
Carolina and returning to the
former Michael's where now
sits Tavern On 13, east of
Southfield.
And what would a
restaurant . . . any restaurant
. . . be without good service?
. . . Sharon Oliver is a book-
keeper by day and a waitress
at David's in the evening .. .
Too bad she only works there
Wednesday, Thursday, Satur-
day and Sunday . . . When it
comes to pretty smiles and
cordial efficiency, none is bet-
ter than Sharon.

David's Family Dining
opened June 1 and seems to
have a pattern that customers
like in this type of a
restaurant . . . real home
cooking, making its own
sauces, soft breadsticks,
soups, salad dressings, etc. . . .
The seven-day-a-week opera-
tion . . . Monday-Thursday,
10:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.; Fri-
day and Saturday until 1
a.m.; and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 10
p.m. . . . has a lot going for it
. . . Cleanliness, the owner or
owners on premises a majori-
ty of the time, casual dining
in intimate surroundings,
family budgeted prices for the
good-size portions, smiling
service like Sharon offers and
private parking.
It isn't necessary for a
restaurant to be pretentious
with lavish decor . . . Give me
a clean place anytime over
one where wall hangings and
a new paint job are many
times strictly cover-ups.
While the former
Dominico's had been sliding
downwards for quite a while,
its replacement, the new
David's Family Dining, looks
to be on a continuous upward
climb . . . and will be as long
as David and Brenda keep up
their enthusiasm . . . People
are comfortable with this

hard-working couple . . .
They're the kind who never
stop trying to make cus-
tomers even more satisfied
than they are . . . You sure
can't beat this.
DON'T TELL Ethel (Ro-
thenberg) Leider and Sheldon
Leider that donuts have no
romance . . . Love came on
their first date at a Dunkin'
Donuts after their blind
meeting . . . The newlyweds
will honeymoon on Mackinac
Island this October.
BACK IN 1985 at the
Detroit Athletic Club, 300
people attended the first
Evening of Brilliance and
raised $100,000 for the
Juvenile Diabetes Founda-
tion . . . Marsha Gordon
chaired the event.
Last year it was held at the
Ritz Carlton with 730 people
raising $250,000 for the J.D.F.
. . . Arlene Schwartzberg and
Dr. Amod Tootla co-chaired.
It's at the Ritz again this
year, with the 8th annual be-
ing chaired by Jane and Bob
Cobb, and proceeds used to

A new look and

finding a cure for diabetes .. .

Joyce Vinegar is the pastry
chef/owner of her new Cakes

the biz for herself . . . Joyce is
the daughter of Lou and
Faygie Vinegar.
HE'S THE Dick Clark of
the dance teacher world .. .
never seems to grow old .. .
The years have been good to
Joe Cornell, who looks better
today than ever, and the
mean swivel hip is still his .. .
Joe and his staff will be at
Temple Beth El, 8:30 p.m.,
Sept. 16, with former adult
students and new students
joining him for a complimen-
tary introductory and
