Tribute to Leon Fill, M.D.

Dr. Leon Fill was a noted community leader whose life works impacted countless people.
A respected surgeon and medical entrepreneur, Dr. Fill's medical career started on the
battlefields of WW 11, where he was decorated with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Returning
to Detroit, he established a practice in Obstetrics, and later founded numerous medical facilities
in the Midwest, including what is now Oakland General Hospital in Madison Heights.
"Doc" Fill was also well-known in Democratic Party circles, serving as the Michigan State
Democratic Party Chairman and the Party's Finance Chairman. He was instrumental in the
campaigns of President John F. Kennedy, Governor John B. Swainson, and Hubert H. Humphrey
to name but a few. He also held elected office, serving for a number of years as Vice-President
of the State Board of Education.
During the mid 1970's Dr. Fill shifted his focus from Medicine to Finance, becoming Chairman
and President of the Madison Bank. He also became more active with Jewish philanthropy.
Dr. Fill was President of the Prime Minister's Club of Israel Bonds, Chairman of the Allied Jewish Campaign, Chairman of the
Israel Emergency Fund, and Finance Chairman and Member of the International Board of Bar Ilan University. He also proudly
built two pre-schools for young children in Israel.
Dr. Fill was a passionate and articulate spokesman for improving the quality and availability of education. As a tribute to this
commitment, his son, Norman M. Fill, has established a special Education Fund in his memory on behalf of the Fill Family.
Norman is Chairman of the Board of the Madison National Bank and Chairman of the Cranbroo ,c Schools Alumni Association.
He is a regular participant in Yeshiva Gedolah's T.O.R.A. Study Program, and is one of this year's 100 honored students.
