more than satisfied" with
the initiative of the National
Tourist Board.
One of the main attrac- -
tions pointed out in the
booklet is a wartime letter
sent by Archbishop,
Damankinos to SS Gen.
Jurgen Stroop, the German
commander in Greece dur-
ing World War II, protesting 0
the deportation of Greek
Jews.
The letter, which was
signed by 250 personalities
and organizations from all
walks of life, triggered the
rage of Mr. Stroop, who
threatened the archbishop
with a firing squad.
Mr. Stroop, who in April
1943 was commander in
Warsaw during the ghetto
uprising, took over SS com-
mand in Athens in
September 1943.
He issued a regulation on
Oct. 3, 1943, requiring Jews
to register and ruling that
any Jew who did not report
to the Germans within five
days would be shot, as would
any non-Jew sheltering a,
Jew.
More than 60,000 Greek
Jews were killed in the
Holocaust, most in1,-
Auschwitz. There were
76,000 Jews in Greece before
the war.

Athens (JTA) — In an un-
precedented move to boost
Jewish tourism, the Greek
National Tourist Organiza-
tion has published a full-
color, 16-page booklet on
"Jewish Heritage in
Greece."
The booklet, whose first
run was 1,200,000 copies, is
published in Greek, English,
French and German.
In addition, excerpts from
the booklet are also publish-
ed in the Olympic Airways
inflight magazine, Kinissi.
The booklet, which will be
distributed worldwide
through the offices of the
Greek Tourist Organization,
refers to sites of historical
interest to Jews and traces
Greek Jewish history for the
past 2,300 years.
Although the initiative
was taken by the Greek
Tourist Organization, the
, Central Board of Jewish
Communities in Greece pro-
vided most of the pictures
and text.
Greece is reportedly the
first and so far the only Eu-
ropean country to publish a
special booklet on its Jewish
heritage. Its aim is to attract
Jewish travelers to Greece.
Nissim Maissis, the presi-
dent of the Central Board of
Jewish Communities, said

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A
1,000-year-old gold mine has
been discovered just north of
Eilat, but it is not likely to
set off a gold rush to the
Negev, archaeologists who
found it say.
The mine has been dated
between 800 and 1000 C.E.,
the period when Palestine
was ruled by the Islamic
Ummayad dynasty. But the
mine was played out by the
end of the first millennium
and shut down.
The discovery, however,
has important historic
value, according to Efrat
Auerbach, spokeswoman for
the joint dig by the Anti-
quities Authority and the
Israeli Geological Institute.
It disproves the widely
held belief that gold was
always imported to the area,
Ms. Auerbach said. Never-
theless, it is the first and
only gold mine discovered in
Israel, so the local supply
could not have been par-
ticularly large.
The dig uncovered rem-
nants of tents and mining 4'
equipment, including a 440-
lb. grinding machine, and a
nearby gold workshop.
Modern prospecting would
not be worth the investment.
According to Ms. Auerbach,
the gold dust found in the vi-
cinity has a maximum con-
centration of 0.7 ounces to
the ton, with an average of
only 0.2 ounces.
In such minute quantities
the gold is virtually invisible
to the human eye. It was
discovered only in the course j
of chemical analysis.
Archaeologists say the
mine was closed when it
became unprofitable. But it
is evidence of Ummayad
efforts to develop the
southern Negev econ-
omically, which included
agricultural settlements,
copper mines and
metalworks.
The gold mine is not far
from the worked-out Tirana
copper mines.
