c Japan Citizen
Rescued Jews

Los Angeles (JTA) — The
,, only Japanese citizen for-
mally recognized as a
"righteous gentile" for his
rescue work during the
c--Holocaust has been belated-
ly honored in his native
c country with the dedication
_,_, of a memorial park.
The park, named the Hill
of Humanity, com-
memorates the deeds of
Sempo Sugihara, who was
Japanese consul in Kaunas,
Lithuania, in 1940, as the
Nazi juggernaut swept
across Europe.
Mr. Sugihara, acting
__,
against the instructions of
c his government, issued
Japanese visas to Lithua-
nian and refugee Polish
Jews seeking desperately to
° leave in anticipation of a
German attack. The likely
number of Jews saved by
such visas has been fre-
0 quently given as 6,000, but
the exact number is not
known.
"Sugihara lost count
himself," said Kiyoshi
Kawai, a friend of the
Sugihara family who was a
major mover in the
memorial park project.
"When his government
assigned him to another
post, he was still giving out
__-_
--visas through the window as
his train pulled out."
Most of the Jews made
their way across Russia to
' hard times but safety in
Japan.
The Japanese government
punished Mr. Sugihara for
his disobedience and
dismissed him from the dip-
lomatic service. His wartime
deeds went unrecognized un-
til 1969, when he was track-
ed down by a survivor who
was stationed with the
Israeli Embassy in Tokyo.
Shortly before his death in
1985, Mr. Sugihara, a Bud-
dhist, was recognized with
the Righteous Among the
Nations award.

Illinois Protects
Burial Rights

, New York (JTA) — Jewish
groups hailed the passage of
Illinois' Burial Rights Act,
the first in the country to en-
,
sure that interment take
place during cemetery labor
" disputes.
The Jewish community
lobbied for the bill after a
, two-month- long
gravediggers strike last
winter left some 300 Jewish
bodies unburied in Chicago's
cemeteries.
