the largest group tour to Israel
ever launched from Michigan,
and Israeli officials are saying
it might be the single largest
mission of its kind ever spon-
sored.
"There we were, planning
on taking a couple of hundred
people to Israel, and somehow
the floodgates opened," said
Mr. Hermelin.
There are several reasons
offered for the overwhelming
numbers. Mr. Hermelin points
to the change from the Shamir
to the Rabin government and
with that Israel's improved re-
lations with the United States.
He added that the Gulf War is
over and there also seems to
be less concern about terrorist
incidents associated with the
Palestinian intifada.
"You have to look at events
such as the intifada and the
Gulf War and see these as rea-
sons why people didn't go to
Israel," said Mr. Hermelin.
"This represents something
like four years of pent-up de-

Arab Mayors Protest
At Premier's Office
Jerusalem (JTA) — Claim-
ing the government has fail-
ed to fulfill budgetary
pledges to Israel's Arab sec-
tor, Arab mayors have
mounted a sit-in demonstra-
tion outside the Prime Min-
ister's Office in Jerusalem.
At the same time, together
with striking municipal
workers, they have in effect
extended the summer vaca-
tion of 300,000 Arab
schoolchildren by keeping
classrooms closed as a
gesture of protest.
But they have so far
refrained from using their
most effective weapon:
withdrawing parliamentary
loyalty from the government
of Yitzhak Rabin.
Paradoxically, this latest
showdown between the
government and the leaders
of Israel's Arab population
comes at a time when the
Arabs hold unprecedented
political power.
The narrow-based
government coalition com-
mands a bare majority of 62
votes in the 120-seat
Knesset and relies for a
more comfortable margin in
blocking the opposition on
the five votes of Arab par-
ties: three from Hadash
(Communist) and two from
the Arab Democratic Party.
Three more Arabs are

mand here in Detroit. People
found out other people were
going, and then a critical lev-
el of excitement was created."
Mr. Hermelin estimated
that if every person going on
the Mission knows a mini-
mum of 20 or 30 others, then .
some 40,000 people or half of
1
Detroit's Jewish population )=-:,
would be touched by the ex- )
citement of the trip.
The non-fund-raising Mis-
sion, which will include indi-
viduals and members from at
least 67 congregations and or-
ganizations, will include spe-
cial-interest programs and -
"mega" events, climaxing on
Israel Independence Day in
Jerusalem.
Mr. Hermelin said the trip
has attracted first-time trav-
elers and those who have been
to Israel dozens of times. He
said itineraries will be set up
so that the entire Mission will
come together only a couple
of times. Full details of the trip
are not yet available. ❑

The Arabs may be caughCil
in a bind. A vote against the
coalition might be too effec-
tive; the only alternative is a
return of the right-wing
government.
Thus, they can draw their
parliamentary gun. They
might even aim it at the
government.
Mazon Funds
Aid Victims
Los Angeles — Mazon: A
Jewish Response to Hunger
will allocate some of the
funds raised in its annual _--
Yom Kippur appeal to aid vic-
tims of war and starvation in
Yugoslavia and Somalia.
In its Yom Kippur appeal,
Mazon asks members of
Jewish congregations and
others to contribute to its e,
hunger-fighting efforts a sum
equal to that which they,-
would have spent on food on
the holy day, a time of fasting
in the Jewish calendar.
Mazon, funded in 1985,
makes grants to food banks,
pantries, soup kitchens and -
advocacy groups for the, c,
hungry, principally in the
United States.
