Friday 9 ;N.M. to 2 hrs. before Sabbath Rabbi Berkovits, Theologian Chicago (JTA) — Rabbi Eliezer Berkovits, Orthodox theologian and ardent Zionist, has died at age 83 in Jerusalem. A native of Transylvania, Rabbi Berkovits earned his Ph.D. at the University of Berlin in 1933. The follow- ing year, he was ordained in the Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin, where he later served as the rabbi of the largest Orthodox syn- agogue. Rabbi Berkovits im- migrated in 1939 to Leeds, England, then to Sydney, Australia, before arriving in 1950 in the United States. He served as chairman of the department of Jewish Philosophy at the Hebrew Theological College (the Skokie Yeshiva) in Skokie, Ill., from 1958 until his retirement in 1975, when he made aliyah. Rabbi Berkovits wrote ex- tensively about such issues as the tensions between secular Jewish nationalism and Jewish religious tradi- tion and the theological implications of the Holo- caust.
