The Grosse Pointe Jewish
Council will sponsor a lecture
by forensic psychiatrist Dr.
Emanuel Tanay on "Survile-
ing the Holocaust" 7:30 p.m.
Sept. 16 at the Grosse Pointe
Unitarian Church, 17150
Maumee, Grosse Pointe.
Dr. Tanay is clinical pro-
fessor of psychiatry at Wayne
State University. He was born
in Poland and faced the
Holocaust during his
adolescence. He survived on
so-called Aryan papers, paru
of the time as a seminarian in
a monastery in Krakow L4s
struggle for survival was
depicted in the Oscar-
nominated documenta-y,
Courage to Care.
Dr. Tanay joined the Way-ne
State faculty and became
associate director of the
Department of Psychiatry e 4-
Detroit Receiving Hospital.
In the late 1960s, his prima -7
interest was psychoanalytic
psychotherapy. He worked ex-
tensively with victims o
psychic trauma, particulai iv
survivors of concentratio
camps and Vietnam veterans.
In the last 15 years, the
focus of his work has been
forensic psychiatry. He is the
author of a book on homicide
and has been an expe_rt
witness in well-known cases,
including those of Jack Ruby,
Ted Bundy and Robert
Garwood.
