Because of the Summer Slowdown
We're reducing our

the walls, then the houses
and landmarks of the New
City, too.
By now I'd descended some
steps and started walking.
The air was cool and fragrant,
and the promenade expansive
enough so that walkers could
enjoy solitude — but also the
occasional company of others.
As I walked, I passed two
soldiers seated on a bench.
Further on, a boy was flying
a kite as his mother watched.
A jogger ran steadily. Two
women walked at a leisurely
pace, speaking in French, ab-
sorbed in conversation.
Besides French, I heard
Hebrew, German, and Arabic
from the passersby. In a few
minutes, I passed several peo-
ple speaking English. They
had paused to admire the
view and identify some land-
marks, and we struck up a
brief conversation.
It turned out they were
Americans, from Ohio and
California, stationed in Israel
as part of the United Nations
Multi National Peacekeeping
Force which helps monitor
the treaty between Israel and
Egypt. They were stationed at
a nearby compound, which
was once the seat of the
British Mandatory Governor.
With a day off, they were
relaxing on the promenade.
It was now approaching
sunset. As I walked further
the Dome of the Rock glowed
more brilliantly, and a glow
settled over the hillside and
the houses of the village.
On the Haas Promenade,
with its memorable vistas
and serenity, I found the ideal
way to savor the beauty of
Jerusalem the Golden. ❑

Leah Rabin
Hospitalized

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Leah
Rabin, wife of Prime Min-
ister Yitzhak Rabin, was re-
ported to be resting comfor-
tably at the Sheba Govern-
ment Hospital at Tel
Hashomer after suffering
severe chest pains during a
tennis game with her hus-
band last weekend.
Leah Rabin, 64, was rush-
ed to the intensive care unit
at the hospital and
underwent a series of tests.
Doctors said she did not
appear to have suffered a
heart attack.
Mrs. Rabin, who is chair-
woman of the Friends of the
Sheba Hospital Association,
recently organized a fund-
raising campaign for equip-
ment for the heart unit
where she is now resting.
