Of course, I also found more
exotic promenades to explore.
One of the most unusual
wasn't actually called a pro-
menade, but the Ramparts
Walk was surely an intrigu-
ing way to enjoy Jerusalem on
foot.
It was a route allowing the
pedestrian to walk all around
the walls of the Old City, on
the ramparts themselves.
Entering at any of the four
gates: Damascus Gate, the
Lions' Gate, Zion Gate or Jaf-
fa Gate — visitors buy a ticket
for about one dollar which
then allows them to exit and
re-enter the route anytime
during 48 hours.
It was a memorable route.
Where else but in Jerusalem

One of the
pleasures of
Jerusalem is its
varied
promenades.

can a pedestrian promenade
on ramparts built by an Ot-
toman sultan in the 1500s?
After five days in
Jerusalem pursuing new pro-
menades, I found the one that
became my personal favorite.
Getting on Bus 48, I told the
bus driver that my destina-
tion was the Haas Pro-
menade. Ten minutes later,
the driver let me off on a wide
road.
At first, I didn't see
anything that looked like a
promenade. "Can you tell me
where is the Haas Pro-
menade?" I asked an Israeli
passing by. He looked puzzled
at first. So I showed him my
guide book, This Week in
Jerusalem — a very helpful
guide for tourists — which
described the promenade and
referred to it as the "Tayelet."
"Ah, the Tayelet!" he said,
and pointed the way across
the road. "It's over there."
A few minutes later, I had
reached a wide and beautiful-
ly landscaped park area, with
leafy trees, velvety grass, and
a stone walkway that seemed
to extend for miles.
Looking down, I saw steps
leading to another path —
and more steps, leading still
lower, with another path.
This was a multi-tiered pro-
menade ideally built to take
advantage of the hillside.
Situated high, it was also
built to take full advantage of
the spectacular view. Stan-
ding on the path, looking
down at the hillside just
below, I could also look across
and see virtually all of
Jerusalem — the Old City,
with the Dome of the Mount,
