the difficulty of recruiting
younger members to B'nai
B'rith's ranks.
"We have to narrow the
focus of what we're doing on
a national level," he said,
adding that nationally he
wants to concentrate on
three areas — international
and government affairs,
senior citizens services, and
youth and family issues. His
goal is to develop a more ef-
ficient relationship between
B'nai B'rith lodges and the
national organization on
these issues.
Jewish Group
Backs Bosnia
About 100 members of the
Jewish Labor Committee
joined the AFL-CIO last
week at the Yugoslav em-
bassy in Washington, D.C.,
to demand an end to the
violence in Bosnia and to in-
sist on full and free elections
in the region.
In a letter delivered to em-
bassy personnel, Lenora
Miller, president of the JLC,
and Lane Kirkland, presi-
dent of the AFL-CIO, allud-
ed to the Holocaust. The two
JI
groups, the letter stated,
"will not stand silent when,
50 years later, an attempt is
made to 'cleanse' a territory
of ethnic or religious 11
groups."
AJC To Join
Haitian Protest
Judy Golub, legislative di-
rector for the American Jew-
ish Committee, and Hyman
Bookbinder, the group's
former Washington repre-
sentative, will participate in
a demonstration planned for
next week in front of the
White House. They will be
joining a broad coalition that
is protesting the Bush ad-
ministration's policy of forc-
ed repatriation of Haitian
refugees.
Ms. Golub said the policy
"is a warning to all refugees,
not just the Haitians; we
think it's very important to
reaffirm this nation's tradi-
tion of safe haven, due pro-
cess and equal justice."

In 1948 James G. McDonald
was the first U.S. ambas-

before, following a private

Hitler, he was among the
first Christian leaders to
warn a skeptical and com-
placent world about the for-
thcoming onslaught against
the Jews of Europe.
