As it stands, the Israeli law provides up to three years' imprisonment for "any Israeli citizen or resi- dent who knowingly, and without authorization, has contact in Israel or abroad with a person who fills a function in the executive council or other similar body • in a terrorist organization, or who serves as an official representative of a terrorist organization." Ohio Court • Overturns Law Cleveland (JTA) — Ohio has become the latest state to have its hate crimes law invalidated since the U.S. Supreme Court declared a municipal anti-hate or- dinance unconstitutional in June. The Ohio Supreme Court ruled last week that while menacing, vandalism and telephone harassment are il- legal, additional fines or jail time can no longer be levied when the crimes are com- mitted because of the vic- tim's race, religion or ethnic origin. The law punished crimes motivated by race, color, re- ligion or ethnic origin by raising the severity of the violation one degree. - The court's unanimous decision said Ohio's ethnic intimidation law essentially created a "thought crime," in violation of both the state and U.S. constitutions. "Enhancing a penalty be- • cause of motive therefore punishes the person's thought, rather than the person's act or criminal in- tent," the court. Marc Stern, co-director of the American Jewish Con- gress Commission on Law and Social Action, cautioned that while the Ohio law was well drafted, the ruling points to the need for legislative care in drafting laws to ensure that free speech is not inhibited. "Judges are not going to be swept along with the P.C. (politically correct) tide and rubber-stamp" all hate crimes legislation, he said. But Mr. Stern said he be- - lieves the Ohio decision is "a serious misreading of the (U.S.) Supreme Court prece- dent." , . We, the parents of Hillel children, support the teachers in their demands in raises and benefits. We consider these requests fair and equitable and long overdue. We will keep our children home until this issue is settled to the teachers satisfaction.* Susan and Ruben Acrich Jane and Ron Koenigsberg Shelly Shindler Mindy Herman Vicki Salinger Marla and David Weiss Brenda and Jim Herman Karin and Barry Steinway Jeff and Michelle Appel Debra and Michael Feldman Steven and Marcy Grant Mindy and Fred Shuback Joanne and Michael Bellet Ann and.
