fourth annual Family Picnic
11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sept. 7.
The community is invited to
attend this free event. The
day's activities will include a
blood drive, donation of food
items for the needy, and a
drop-off for badly needed food
and clothing items for Florida
and Louisiana victims of Hur-
ricane Andrew.

Synagogue Hosts
Kabbalat Shabbat

The J.E.F.F. Committee and
the Sisterhood of Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek will host
a starlight Kabbalat Shabbat
family service 7 p.m. Sept. 11,
featuring students from Beth
Hayeled, religious school,
Hillel Day School and new
members. The evening is be-
ing chaired by Gail Schwartz.
The service, which will be
led by the rabbis, will be held
in the courtyard off the main

Shir Tikvah Plans
Tot Shabbat

Congregation Shir Tikvah
will hold a tot Shabbat 7 p.m.
Sept. 11. Conducted by Rab-
bi Arnie Sleutelberg, this in-
formal service will feature
singing and storytelling
geared to pre-school children.

Honors Kreisman

A special Kiddush will
follow Shabbat morning ser-
vices 9 a.m. Sept. 6 at Con-
gregation Shaarey Shoma-
yim, in honor of Samuel
Kreisman's 90th birthday.
Mr. Kreisman was born in
a small village in Karpata
Russ. He has been the gabbai
of the synagogue for many
years.

State of Israel Bonds
Will Honor Whitmer

The Metro Detroit Profes-
sional Health Services Divi-
sion of State of Israel Bonds
will honor Richard E.
Whitmer, president and chief
executive officer of Blue Cross
and Blue Shield of Michigan,
at a tribute dinner 6 p.m.
Sept. 21 in the Renaissance
Ballroom of the Westin Hotel,
Detroit. Mr. Whitmer will
receive the State of Israel
Peace Medal.
Richard Whitmer was ap-
pointed president and chief
executive officer of Blue Cross
and Blue Shield of Michigan
in 1988. He has served in
various capacities with
Michigan state government,
including legislative counsel
to the governor and director of
the Michigan Department of
Commerce.
He is chairman of New
Detroit, Inc., and is on a varie-
ty of boards including Detroit
Renaissance, Economic Club
of Detroit, Michigan Special
Olympics and the Wharton
Center Advisory Council. Mr.
Whitmer received a Diamond
Award from Women in Com-
munications, Inc. in 1990 for
his leadership in promoting
the welfare and success of
