Young Israels Support
Jerusalem Proclamation

ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM

Assistant Editor

y

oung Israel congrega-
tions throughout
metro Detroit are
joining a national drive to
help gain support for recog-
nition of Jerusalem as
Israel's capital.
Young Israel of Oak-
Woods, Young Israel of
Greenfield, Young Israel of
Southfield and Young Israel
of West Bloomfield all have
been mailed petitions, to be
signed by the rabbi, presi-
dent and other members of
the congregation, in support
of the Unified Yerushalyim
Project. The yearlong drive
is being spearheaded by the
National Council of Young
Israel, based in New York.
"It's not political and has
nothing to do with the peace
negotiations," said National
Young Israel Executive Vice
President Ephraim Sturm.
"It's simply a matter of pride
and pomp and splendor."
The drive began last year
in Israel, in conjunction with
the 25th anniversary of the
reunification of Jerusalem.
The petition, known as the
"Jerusalem Covenant," was
written by the deputy presi-
dent of Israel's Justice
Department.
Hundreds of copies of the

petition, which is more than
four-feet long, have been--- Th
mailed to Young Israel con-
gregations nationwide.
Signed copies are returned
to the national office, then
forwarded to Israel where
they will be recorded in
government archives.
Rabbi Sturm initiated the
U.S. drive after meeting this

summer with government
representatives in Israel. He
was eager to see the Young.
Israel movement, which es-
tablished its first branch in
Israel in 1925, participate,
he said.
According to Rabbi Sturm,
the proclamation already is
being used at weddings
throughout the Jewish state. —I
After the bridegroom
smashes the glass, in part to
commemorate the destruc-
tion of the Temple, the peti-
tion honoring the unity of
Jerusalem is read "as a kind
of condolence," Rabbi Sturm
said. The new couple then °
receives a copy of the proc-
lamation.
