ple from all over the world, so
I love working here," says
Sharona, who speaks Hebrew,
English and Hindi.
Eze Ogbannaya wore his
African clothes. The Nigerian
native, who works as a
receiver in housekeeping, im-
migrated four years ago and
now has a degree in business
from the University of Haifa.
Sophie Greenberg came to
Israel much more recently.
She arrived from Moscow in
April of 1991, and I met her
at the Sheraton Jerusalem
Plaza, where I stayed during
the second part of my trip. It
turned out to be another
Hotel United Nations.
Seated on the terrace one
evening to enjoy dinner and
watch the azure Jerusalem
sky gradually darken, I was
served by Sophie. It was only
her second week on the job,
and she was attentive and
eager to please.
"I came to the hotel and
asked for a job, and they gave
me one!" marveled Sophie,
18, who came from Moscow
with her father and mother
and plans to attend Hebrew
University to study
languages.
The Sheraton, like other
Israeli hotels, is trying to help
the recent Russian olim by
hiring them whenever possi-
ble. Unlike Sophie, who knew
Hebrew when she came, they
r" often begin with behind-the-
scenes jobs, like dishwashing
)and housekeeping, until they
master language skills and
I > can interact with guests.
.)
"The hotel is trying to im-
prove the new immigrants'
> lives and this is a good way to
give them a push. They can
work with Israelis and im-
prove their language skills,"
said concierge Ilan Weill.
Mr. Weill himself needs no
improvement in language. At
the busy front desk, he
I answers the phones and easi-
ly shifts gears from Hebrew to
English to French to German.
He greets guests by name and
it efficiently and pleasantly
handles details from booking
tours to explaining how to get
to the Western Wall.
The genial concierge, who
looks debonair in his suit, tie,
and red silk kipot, is a native
of Strasbourg, France, who
emigrated 12 years ago,
studied hotel management at
the Israel Hotel Training
I School and worked at several
other hotels before coming to
1
the Sheraton Jerusalem
,3 Plaza four years ago.
Here he meets guests from

• many countries.
"We're from many different
places, but we're all Jews. We
= - ,-7 all came here because we
wanted to make our lives in
Israel." ❑
