Swidler Mounts
Ceramic Exhibit

Swidler Gallery will pre-
sent contemplative ceramic
vessels by Paul Kotula and
Tony Marsh through Sept. 26.
Both artists' work derives its
energy from its emerging con-
cerns for both pottery and
sculpture. Mr. Kotula's
utilitarian dinnerware and
Mr. Marsh's vessels, filled
with abstracted three-
dimensional images, reflect
upon the spiritual and
human aspects of our time.
Mr. Kotula, an instructor at
the Center for Creative
Studies, received his Bachelor
of Fine Arts from Wayne
State University and his
Master of Fine Arts from the
New York State College of
Ceramics at Alfred Universi-
ty. Mr. Kotula's hand-built
stoneware pottery presents a.
hybrid of contemporary issues
within each pot's volume and
within his full table
installations.
Mr. Marsh received his
Bachelor of Fine Arts from
California State University,
Long Beach, where he is
assistant professor. Mr. Marsh
narrates personal time
related events by placing
abstracted images within the
protective pottery container.
Subtly colored, his pieces are
both sensual and cerebral,
organic and geometric, solid
and hollow, male and female,
weighted and weightless.
Swidler Gallery is at 308
West Fourth Street, Royal
Oak. Gallery hours are
Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m.-5
> p.m.

Duckworth Pottery
At Pewabic

The sculpture of Ruth
Duckworth will be shown in
Pewabic Pottery's gallery
Sept. 11-Nov. 13. Ms.
Duckworth also will lecture
at the Detroit Institute of
Arts 2 p.m. Sept. 12. A recep-
tion for the artist will be held
at Pewabic immediately after
the lecture, 4-7 p.m. Co-
sponsored by the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts' Friends of
Modern Art/Modern
Decorative Arts Group and by
the Michigan Potters'
Association, these events are
free and open to the public.
Ms. Duckworth was trained
as a potter, and her reliefs and
sculpture are made with the
traditional ceramic methods
of slab- and coil-building. Ab-
sent of color, the surfaces of
her work express a purity,
animated through subtle
relationships.
For information, call
Pewabic Pottery, 822-0954.
