New Lease
Continued from Page 77
Describing herself as a peo-
ple person, she enjoys
greeting her guests and in-
vites people to browse. "She
wanted a warm atmosphere
where people would feel com-
fortable and welcome," her
daughter says, "but the
gallery reflects her sophisti-
cated taste. She's very vibrant
and warm-hearted and re-
lates to people of all ages."
Among her well-wishers is
her former employer. "It's
wonderful to see Judy go for
it," says Leslie Ann Pilling of
the Presence II jewelry bouti-
que. "She's well-connected in
the art community. She has a
great sense of artistic style
and a great sense of aesthetic
appeal. I admire her for put-
ting both feet forward and
jumping in. I think she'll be
very happy."
A widow for 17 years, Mrs.
Dresner has two children, two
grandchildren and a new
great-grandchild. In addition
to her love of art, she enjoys
music, reading, traveling and
word games that stimulate
her mind. Having worked
J much of her life, she is no
stranger to paying her dues.
Her experiences included
everything from bookkeeping
to a stint as a torch singer.
"As a young lady I was sell-
ing men's hose and ties door
to door and a customer heard
me humming and asked me
', to audition for a singing job
'on the radio," she says. That
led to appearances in several
Michigan clubs.
Seeking fame and fortune,
she moved to New York. "I
acted in anything that was of-
fered. I lived with other star-
ving artists and at times liv-
ed on donuts and coffee. It was
one of the happiest times of
my life."
Though she longed to see
her name in lights, she
returned to Detroit to raise a
family. She honed her
business skills during the 30
years she spent working in
her family's cleaners. Much of
her time was devoted to
health care, both her hus-
,, band's and her own. When
time permitted, she took art
classes and enjoyed painting
and sculpting. Occasionally,
she sketches in the gallery.
Optimistic about her future,
she would love to see her
business grow and is con-
stantly looking for items that
people will want to buy. She
says she is giving the gallery
a year to be profitable.
"If it's successful, fine, if not
that's fine too. It gives me a
great sense of satisfaction just
knowing that I had the guts
to do it. It's given me a new
lease on life. Win, lose or
draw, I'm doing what I
love." ❑

Fact is, more Americans
may die by the fork than by
any other weapon. That's
because so many of them
use it irresponsibly. Like
to fill up on high-fat, high-
cholesterol foods. Foods
that can load the blood with
cholesterol, which can build
up plaque in their arteries,
increasing their risk of
heart attacks and threaten-
ing their lives. So next time
you pick up a fork, remem-
ber to handle it as you
would any other weapon.
For self-defense, not
self-destruction.
