ith the two party
conventions now a
matter of media
history, there cannot be too
much hope for a reduction in
the regrettable but
unavoidable mudslinging.
This is expected in politics,
but it does not necessarily
eliminate the bright sides
striving for positives.
We have been introduced
to the disputable in judging
party platforms. We hope to
learn how long the 1992
planks will be remembered.
How long have previous par-
ty platforms survived polit-
ical rhetoric and the millions
of words included in the
news reports that related to
them?
While there is the unques-
tioned aim of separating re-
ligion from politics, the re-
ligious term in the idealism
urged by a famous authors
should not be forgotten. In
his challenging Voice of
Jerusalem (1921), Israel
Zangwill appealed for high
standards in public aspira-
tions by stating:
If the world is not to
perish in its blindness, it
must revert to the leader-
ship of thinkers and men
of faith. Politics ... must
become religion instead of
religion _ at the first real
call upon it _ becoming
politics.
There was another ap-
proach on a universalistic
scale from Napolean. We
have much to learn from the
works compiled by Leo
Rosten. Here is a Napoleonic
comment quoted by Mr.
Rosten:
My policy is to govern
men the way the great
majority wants to be
governed ... By making
myself Catholic I brought
the war in Vendee to an
end. By becoming a
Moslem, I established my-
self in Egypt. By acting
ultramontane, I won the
minds of the Italians. If I
governed a nation of
Jews, I should restore the
temple of Solomon.
It is also fascinating to
read this quotation from
Napoleon Bonaparte includ-
ed in Mr. Rosten's book In-
finite Riches:
Suddenly I found myself
victorious, laying down
the law, courted by
emperors ... What en-
thusiasm! What shouting!
"Long live the liberator of
Italy!" At twenty-five!
From that moment, I
foresaw what I might be
... I felt the earth flee
from beneath me, as if I
were being carried to the
sky.
Specialized reading deal-
ing with politics and politi-
cians began to be compiled
in Arm Arbor more than 60
years ago published under
the title Speakers En-
cyclopedia of Stories, Quota-
tions and Anecdotes when its
author, Jacob Braude, was
judge of the municipal court
of Chicago.
Among the popular poetic
works perpetuated in the
Braude collection is
"Counsel for Candidates" by
Edgar A. Guest. A jour-
nalistic record accompanies
the poem. The advice and
guidance provided to
aspirants to political fame
remain impressive.
COUNSEL FOR
CANDIDATES
My boy, if office you
would seek
Acquire a pleasing way
to speak,
For if you have a rasping
voice
You'll never be the
people's choice;
And should you grate
upon the ear
You'll finish sadly in the
rear,
For folks who hark to
radios
Won't vote for talkers
through the nose.
Time was but few could
hear or see
The men who would
their favorites be.
They read about them in
the press;
Disputed of them, more
or less,
And oft mistook for
common sense
What then was flowery
eloquence.
So Lincoln, ugly, gaunt
and thin,
Upon his merits had to
win.
But things are different
today.
'Tis not so much what
statesmen say,
But how they say it. Do
they look
Like pictures in a fashion
book?
Have they the sort of
chin or nose which
Pleases folks at picture
shows?
.
,
I
And have they glamor?
Will they go
On film and disc and
radio?
Get glamor! Glamor, such
as can
Attract the moving
AO
picture fan.
At work or at your
•-
favorite sport
Remember you must
make a "short!'
And if you are not good
to see,
Al
At ballot time you'll
beaten be.
Not all the wisdom you
enjoy
Will not outrun a glamor
boy.

Delightful memories ac- •
company the reading of the
Edgar Guest philosophy.
Now the references here to
some of the famous names to
be remembered as guides to
politicians in their quest for
public roles help retain high al
standards in politics. The
sensations reappearing in
our time serve to justify the
philosophy of such advice. ❑ 411

Swissair
Accepts Shekels"
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Swissair, ' '
the Swiss airline, is ap-
parently convinced that
Israel has overcome its infla-
tionary problems and has
announced that its tickets.
now be payable in local cur-

rency.
As of Sept. 1, Israelis will
be able to purchase Swissair
tickets at an exchange rate
between dollars and shekels
that will be fixed monthly.
rather than daily.
Swissair tickets are still a
quoted formally in dollars.
But unlike the previous
system, . under which travel
agents had to convert the I
price into Israeli currency one
a daily basis, the prices in
shekels will be fixed at the
beginning of each month and
remain constant for that
month, even in the event of
currency devaluation.
Swissair hopes its example
will be followed by otheei
airlines, including El Al.
The decision was welcom-
ed by the Association of
Israeli Travel Agencies,
which said that the new
method would simplify its
work and make it easier for
customers to plan vacations.
