Leland Wary Of Motives
Of Political Opposition

KIMBERLY LIFTON

Staff Writer

S

tate Rep. Burton
Leland, D-Detroit, is a
little miffed these
days at the power politics
surrounding his reelection
bid.
He just won a hotly con-
tested battle that virtually
guarantees him victory in
November in the historically
Democratic district. But he
can't seem to forget the
reason his race was so much
in the limelight.
Mr. Leland is white and
Jewish in a predominantly
black area of Detroit. He was
targeted by labor leaders,
who threw their support
toward Juanita Watkins, a
black candidate who ran
against Mr. Leland for state
house.
Most puzzling to Mr.
Leland is that he has been a
consistent supporter of
unions.
"I'd like to bury the hat-
chet and let it go," Mr.
Leland says. "But it was
race-baiting, and I am
angry. I think it is wrong."
Meanwhile, Jewish Com-
munity Council President
Jeannie Weiner sent a letter
on Aug. 6 to United Auto
Workers vice president Er-
nie Lofton, who spearheaded
the campaign for black rep-
resentation from Detroit.
The letter questions an
Aug. 2 Detroit News article,
in which Mr. Lofton
"appeared to be opposing
Leland based primarily on
the fact that he is white and
Jewish."
Ms. Weiner asked if the
comments attributed to Mr.
Lofton were accurate and
spoke of Mr. Lofton's long
history of support for
Histadrut and Israel Bonds.
"If the article were accu-
rate, it described statements
which amount to race-
baiting at a time when unity
is so important," she wrote.
Though she asked Mr. Lof-
ton to contact her if he want-
ed to discuss the issue, he
has not replied.

GOP Convention
Prompts Birth?

Alan Zekelman is convinc-
ed that Alice Gilbert's trip to
Houston for the Republican
National Convention had
something to do with the
early birth of his daughter.
On Tuesday, Aug. 18, a
few days before her due date,
Gwen Gilbert (Alan's wife

Alice Gilbert

and Alice's daughter) gave
birth to a 7 lb., 9 oz. girl
named Ariel Rebecca)
Zekelman.
Former Judge Alice
Gilbert, who had said she.-
would return to Michigan if
Gwen went into labor, left
Houston after she received
an early morning call at her
hotel room.

Jewish Groups Plan
Political Forum

Several Jewish groups, ir,N "'
cluding the Jewish Comx
munity Council, National
Council of Jewish Women,
Hadassah and Jewish Fed-‹
eration, are mustering forces
to plan the last of three edu=
cational candidate forums
before the November gen-
eral election.
The forum will be schedul-
ed for a date in early Oc- <
tober. Organizers are con-
sidering inviting candidate
running for the 11th and
12th Congressionar
Districts, Oakland county
executive and Michigan
Supreme Court.

Election Committee
Blasts GOP

Ruth King just doesn't
give up.
She was once active with
the GOP but recently has
given up memberships
Republican-labeled groups._ (
Among them are the conser-
vative think-tank, the
Heritage Foundation, and
the National Jewish Coali-
tion, the Republican Jewish
r
think-tank.
She is working full time as
a volunteer treasurer of th65
Jewish Election committee,
which is registered with the
Federal Election Commis- T,
sion. Its purpose is to
educate Jewish voters about
political candidates.
