FRIDAY. AUGUST 28. 1992

n these difficult economic
times, most everyone has
felt the financial crunch.
When cuts are made
throughout government and
schools, art and music pro-
grams often are hardest hit.
Children are now only ex-
posed to Bach and Dali
through the guidance of
family.
Mark Gottleib is helping
pick up the slack.
The Royal Oak composer is
channeling some of his time
and talent into the musical
future of Detroit youth. Mr.
Gottleib is teaching courses
at Evola Music in Bloomfield
Hills aimed at exposing
children to the methods of
music.
The Yamaha music pro-
gram, developed in Japan
and used throughout Japan,
Europe and the United
States teaches 4- to 7-year-
olds rhythm, melody and
structure. The children apply
that knowledge throughout
the 16-week semester to
developing keyboard, percus-
sion and vocal skills.
Mr. Gottleib is one of two
teachers in the Detroit area

instructing by the Yamaha •
method.
Yamaha teachers must b€,
accepted into the intensive
training session. A solid
musical background is key.
"You simply cannot make
a living as a composer, so 4
teaching is always an op-
tion," Mr. Gottleib said. "It,
has to be a pleasurable op-
tion though. I've always en-•
joyed the company of chil-
dren; they're not as wrecked
as adults. You can show a
child a starfish. They love it
and are amazed by it ani,
may grow up to be influenc-
ed by the ocean because
it."
Because of the abstract
concepts involved in music,
Mr. Gottleib views
educating children as a
challenge. However, he finds"
it most important ancli
rewarding.
"Schools can no longer af-
ford the responsibility of
educating children about
music. It becomes the
responsibility of those with Pt
vested interest in music,"
Mr. Gottleib said. "So as
composer, I feel responsible
to create a new crop of music
lovers by simply allowing
them the opportunity to
make a choice."
"The greatest sin is having
