LOCAL NEWS

The Michigan Board of Rabbis strongly condemns the acts
of transport, "ethnic cleansing" and genocide which are
reportedly taking place in what was formerly Yugoslavia.

These heinous crimes remind us of similar actions carried out
against the Jewish people over filly years ago, Six million of
our people were slaughtered when the world was deaf to
their cry. We must not allow another people to suffer the
same fate. The world cannot sit back and let innocent
people be treated this way again!

We call upon our government, upon the United Nations,
and all who are empowered, to investigate swiftly the extent
of these atrocities, and, if need be, to intercede to prevent
such crimes against humanity. The rights of all peoples must
be protected!

New Exhibit

Visitors to the Holocaust
Memorial Center will notice
a new permanent exhibit on
the outside wall of the video
theater. Artist and sculptor
Martin Lowenberg has
designed and created
representations of the 11
badges and armbands the
Nazis forced Jews to wear in
the occupied territories.
Jack Lipton, electrician, in-
stalled the display, artist San-
dra M. Greenberg, Mr. Lowen-
berg's daughter, hand-painted
the color renditions of the
badges and fashioned the ex-
hibit's textual explanations.
The brass and nickel silver
badges are illuminated with c_
special lighting effects that
simulate the destructive
flames of the Holocaust. _1
Depicted are the badges that ';
were worn by the Jews in ,,)‘
Belgium, Bulgaria,
Czechoslovakia, France, Ger-
many, Holland, Hungary, Lat-
via , Lithuania, Greece,
Poland, Romania, and
Yugoslavia. The Nazi Ger-
man government mandated
that all Jews wear these -
badges or risk death.
This policy enabled govern-
ment authorities to isolate
the Jews from the rest of the
population in order to easily
concentrate them into ghet-
tos, deprive, starve, and
ultimately deport them to
death camps.
