out there who really want to
learn the language," she says.
One organization that does of-
fer Japanese language classes is
the Greater Detroit and Wind-
sor Japan-American Society, an
organization that aims to
strengthen ties between the
Japanese people and citizens of
Detroit and Windsor.
The law firm Honigman,
Miller, Schwartz and Cohn is a
member of the society.
Frederick Frank, an attorney
at Honigman, Miller, Schwartz
and Cohn, says their law firm
is counsel to Japanese compa-
'-' vies and they want to meet with
Japanese people in an informal
setting and understand their cul-
ture.
There are many places to take
a language class. Many commu-
nity education programs include
a variety of language classes and
they are probably the least ex-
pensive. Midrasha College of
Jewish Studies offers Hebrew.
Nira Lev teaches Hebrew at
Midrasha. She says it takes at
least a year for someone to get a
good grasp of the language.
"People want to learn Hebrew
for a variety of different reasons,"
she says. "Some want a mode of
identification just like going to
services or as a way to identify
with Israel. For some Orthodox
it is a way to strengthen their
understanding of the Torah."
Midrasha offers a variety of
classes from "absolutely very be-
ginning Hebrew reading" to very
advanced Hebrew classes (they
also have a Yiddish class).
Southfield Community Edu-
cation has enrichment programs
in French, German, Italian,
Japanese, Russia, Spanish and
American Sign Language.
Nancy Enright, the program
manager of adult and youth en-
richment classes in Southfield,
says the main reasons people en-
roll in their classes are because
they are vacationing in a foreign
country, they have been sent
abroad for a period of time to con-
duct business or decide to return
to college and use the courses for
refreshers.
Their most popular class is
American Sign Language where
the average class size ranges
from 18-22 students.
When Marilyn Kaczander-Co-
hen teaches sign language in
Southfield she will ask her stu-
dents why they are taking the
course.
"I guess people are becoming
more sensitive to those who need
to communicate differently. I
meet people who work with a
deaf person and want to learn
the language," Ms. Kaczander-
Cohen says. "I also taught a class
for the City of Southfield because
their employees wanted to com-
municate with the deaf resi-
dents. I think it has a lot to do
with growing sensitivity to the
needs of other people." ❑
