Call The Jewish News 354-5959 John Barfield JNF Honors John Barfield The Jewish National Fund will present John W Barfield, founder and chairman of the Barfield Companies, with the Tree of Life Award at a dinner to be held 6 p.m., Oct. 1 at the Radisson on the Lake in Ypsilanti. Proceeds will go toward a JNF afforestation project in Mr. Barfield's name in Jerusalem's American In- dependence Park. The Tree of Life Award is presented in recognition of professional and humanitarian leadership. Active in many business and community endeavors, Mr. Barfield, an Ann Arbor resident, is a member of the Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Detroit Chamber of Corn- merce. He served on the first community advisory board of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and since 1984 has been a member of the Economic Alliance for Michigan. He also is the co-chairman for the regional Michigan campaign of the United Negro College Fund. In 1983, he establish- ed the Lena Barfield Memorial Scholarship Fund for low-income minority and underprivileged students. Torah Center Holds Lecture Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg of Bais Chabad Torah Center will speak on "Is There Pro- phecy In This Day And Age" 8:15 p.m., Aug. 24, at the Torah Center. Sinai Hospital's Center for Ophthalmic Research and Development is seeking volunteers for a series of glaucoma and elec- trodiagnostic studies. The center's studies require a total of 100 volunteers with normal, healthy eyes and pa- tients without a family history of glaucoma. These patients will be used to establish normal values for the studies. Volunteers should be at least 35 years old and preferably in the 50-to-75 year age range. All volunteers selected will be given a free eye exam at the Sinai Hospital Eye Clinic as part of the studies. In ad- dition, the volunteers for the electrodiagnostic study will be paid $15 upon successful completion of the 1 1/2 hour tests. Volunteers for the glaucoma multi-testing studies will be paid $50 upon successful completion of the 4 1/2 hour tests. Qualified volunteers may participate in both studies if they wish. This class will offer the student a car- diovascular workout utilizing the facilities of the Center's Cardiovascular Center.
