who accompanied Mr. Dinan
on a trip four years ago, dur-
ing which they traveled
throughout Europe to visit
bird parks. "I thought it was
a nice dream, but when we
got back, Elon started to look
at designs and make plans,"
relates Mr. Naveh . "Every-
body said, 'He's a dreamer,
but he went on planning!'
Those plans led finally to a
bird park that not only
houses a huge variety of
birds, but also shows off the
wonders of nature in Israel.
For instance, in the center
of the park is a lagoon area
with varied tropical plants
grown in nurseries in Israel.
In the lagoon itself are water-
growing plants and flowers:
roses, hyacinths, and water
lilies grown by Kibbutz
Hazorea. The lagoon also is
home to Japanese carp which
came from Kibbutz Magan
Michael.
Near the lagoon is the walk-
through aviary, a one-acre
area entirely in the open ex-
cept for a mesh-like tent
above us. In this walk-
through area, birds are flying,
nesting, bathing.
Some are simply sitting
pretty: Mr. Naveh points out
three birds perched very high
up in a tree. "See how their
tails are spread?" says Mr.
Naveh, explaining that they
are males perched like this to
proudly display their colorful
tails to the females.
Now we've reached the out-
door auditorium, which is fill-
ed to capacity today with
youngsters who are watching
attentively as two young men
on stage put some parrots
through their paces. The
children are from a nearby
Arab village and have come
on an excursion to the bird
park. They are captivated.
The park regularly gets a
good number of school
children. As is evident today,
it draws both young and old,
natives and tourists. Tours
have been given in Hebrew,
Arabic, German, English and
French.
All the visitors are en-
thusiastic about the new bird
park. One woman, an Israeli
fashion designer, recently
spent an entire afternoon gaz-
ing at the vividly colorful
birds. She said, "People used
to raise their eyebrows at the
colors that I mixed. But look
at this! Now I know I have the
authority to mix all these
bright colors. Nature does it,
too."
The warm responses,
whether from a fashion
designer or from Arab village
children, are just what Mr.
Naveh and Mr. Dinan hoped
for when they first started
planning the park.
