In an interesting twist, the group backing Mr. Levy is headed by Yisrael Katz, a former aide of Ariel Sharon, a political rival of Levy's. The group sent letters last week proposing the idea to members of Likud's central committee. Mr. Levy himself has not officially reacted to the pro- posal, but the fact that heads of his camp, such as Yavneh Mayor Yehuda Brus, de- scribed Mr. Levy as the right candidate for the job, was interpreted as an indication that he would not say no. According to the Levy lobby, he was the right per- son for the job because he symbolized a national con- sensus, as the man who can bridge communal gaps. Mr. Levy is Sephardi in a leader- ship circle dominated by Ashkenazim and is con- sidered a member of Likud's more dovish camp. Mr. Levy's supporters argue that their candidate could enjoy the support of Labor, the religious parties and even the Arab parties and Meretz. They recalled that Mr. Herzog, a member of Labor's more hawkish camp, was elected to office in 1983 years ago thanks to the support of the right. Another surprising can- didacy that is reportedly be- ing considered is that of Brig. Gen. (Res.) Nahman Shai, who is being proposed as Labor's candidate for mayor of Jerusalem, once Teddy Kollek retires. Gen. Shai won fame serving as army spokesman during the Persian Gulf War. Mr. Kollek himself is not too happy with the idea. He said that although he held Gen. Shai in esteem, he believed that his candidacy should be considered only after Gen. Shai acquired several years of municipal experience. Mr. Kollek's own candidate is Amos Mar- Haim, the present deputy mayor. The Likud is considering running former Health Min- ister Ehud Olmert as its candidate for the mayoralty. Call The Jewish News 354-5959 Mandela Welcomed In Jewish Suburb Johannesburg (JTA) — African National Congress President Nelson Mandela was given a sweet welcome to his new home in Houghton, an upscale Jew- ish suburb here. Mr. Mandela's new neighbor, member of Parliament Tony Leon of the Democratic Party, brought a gift of chocolate cake, which he left with a member of the household staff in Mandela's absence. "I felt it WaS a nice touch," said Mr. Leon, a Jew who represents a district com- prising 22 suburbs, in- cluding Houghton. Mr. Leon has been regarded as one of the sharpest critics of the ANC. But he welcomes the move of blacks into Houghton, enabled by the overturning by South African President F.W. de Klerk of the apartheid law that segregated residential areas. Mr. Leon described Mandela's home as "a fairly modest double- story," com- pared to the many mansions in Houghton. Mr. Leon, a lawyer and academic, is sought after as "a Jewish spokesman" on political and other issues, succeeding Harry Schwarz, a veteran member of Parlia- ment who is now the South African ambassador to the United States. He expressed concern for the country's future, par- ticularly in three areas — property rights, physical safety and "white flight" or potential emigration of white South Africans who are anxious over massive changes in the country. A large-scale departure of skilled whites would produce an "economic Holocaust," he said. But he added: "However pessimistic people may feel, there is still a glimmer of hope. Because for every right-wing fanatic there is a right-wing realist, and every warlord is matched by a man of peace." "But the shafts of light are often overwhelmed by clouds of darkness," he said.
