become a bad luck city for
him.
"I've ridden into Petoskey
on five or six rides, and I can't
remember once that I've
made it through without get-
ting a flat tire," freed said.
The motorcycle, meanwhile,
broke down within the first
20 miles of the trip. After
Freed received a spare bicycle
from his crew in Petoskey, the
crew had to return to Cross
Village, 58 miles away, and
get the motorcycle.
The crew didn't catch up to
Freed until 8:40 p.m. in
Manistee. All arrived in
Muskegon at 1:15 a.m.
From Muskegon, it was on
to Grand Rapids and then,
along Old Grand River into
the western edge of Lansing.
It was thr4re, at 5:15 a.m., that
Freed' took his nap. Outside.
In the cold. On the cement.
-" "I didn't want to go into the
I was afraid I wouldn't
come out," he said.
Freed didn't go into the van.
Instead, he got back on his
bike less than an hour later
nd finished what he had set
out to do.
Persons wishing to make a
donation on behalf of Freed's
efforts can call the West
Bloomfield Parks and Recrea-
tion office at 334-5660.
