SPORTS MACCAB I Continued from Page 1 Detroit team will be fellow swimmer Jodi Shapiro, tennis player Jared Miller, track athletes Sari Berman and David Epstein, volleyballer Jordan Glass and wrestler Marc Goldman. This is Miller's fifth Maccabi Games, the fourth for the others. For Rosenberg, "It's not so much the competition, but meeting people. I've tried to stay in touch with swimmers on the Detroit team and with the athletes we housed here in 1990 ... I didn't win any medals last year (in Cleve- land) but I had just as good a time." The Baltimore games al- ready are different for wrestler Goldman. In Detroit • two years ago, the home team had 20 athletes and three coaches. Next week, he'll be Detroit's only wrestler. He's worked out on his own this summer, with the help of former state champion Den- ny Rapal, but he's not yet sure of his Maccabi weight class. In high school, at West Bloomfield, he competes at 125 pounds. In Baltimore, he'll wrestle at 130 or 140. Making friends with other Jewish youngsters from around the world is what the North American Maccabi Games are all about. Balti- more is expecting 2,700 young Jewish athletes, 500 more than Detroit hosted. Goldman is sure he'll make his share of friends, but he also wants a medal. "I was fourth in Detroit two years ago, and I was the youngest one on the team," he said. Sari Berman and David Epstein lead one of the largest track teams Detroit has ever had. But Berman's first corn- petition will be Sunday night. Both she and Epstein were flagbearers for the Detroit delegation at the regional games in New Jersey last summer. Some of the Detroit teams competed in the Cleve- - land regional. "I told David that I wanted the Israeli flag this time," Berman said. "I'm going to fight for it." The two sprinters also will lead Detroit's track athletes on the field. Berman, who at- tends North Farmington, and Epstein, of Andover, will com- pete in the 100 and 200 me- ter dashes and on sprint relays. Berman will add the high jump and Epstein the long jump. Coach Joel Kashdan and assistant Don Rudick expect strong performances from dis- tance runners Adam Estrine, Joey Edwards, Mike Durante, Eric Adelman, Jessica Fields • and Elyse Adelson. Chad De- Wolf should be a contender in the sprints and high jump, as should the 15-16 sprint relay of Epstein, Ryan Sills, Daniel Ben-Meir and Marty Maddin. Rounding out the squad are Elizabeth Dubin, Mike Grant, Tracie Ratiner, Peter Rose, Rachel Weiss, Elana and Shi- m Weiss, and Geoff Werber. Tennis coach Larry Miller has big hopes in singles and doubles for his son, Jared, a Class B state champion this spring at Andover. Jared will team in doubles with Brad Dubin, who was on the No. 1 doubles team at Cranbrook. In the 13-14 age group, Michael Brown and Justin Goldfarb will be competing. Danny Friedman, a Maccabi veteran and four-year No. 1 singles player at Birmingham Groves, will be assistant coach. On the girls side, tennis coaches Lynda Okun and Jan- ice Bloom are working with Elyse Lakritz, Elite Ben-Ozer, Carrie Fenton and Jennifer Manko. Ben-Ozer won silver medals in singles and doubles in Cleveland last year. The boys basketball team is lacking the size and expe- rience that led to a top 16 fin- ish in Detroit in 1990 and a gold medal in Cleveland in 1991. They are coached by Ken Bertin, Sam Skeegan and Mark Carney, assisted by Lisa Slovis, Jason Gold, Al Garner and Cortney Kalbfeld. Twenty-seven volleyballers were selected from 81 teens trying out. With four Maccabi veterans on the boys team and eight on the girls team, Detroit plans to give Chicago — the gold medalists in 1990 and 1991 — a battle. The girls team, coached by Mark Jeross and Bob Gamer with support from Lawrence Gardner, will rely on veterans Jamie Golding and Lori Ka- plan, and newcomers Korrie Bayer and Dayna Swarin. In the back court, Jodi Berris, Mikki Mentzel and Emily Goldsmith will direct a team that finished fourth in the re- gional last year. Detroit is sending three teams into volleyball compe- tition: a boys team, girls team Aaron Fenberg, Brian Gali- son, Ben Hurvitz, Gurston Nyquist and Brian Tepper. The coed team: Julie Golding, Stacey Rothenberg, Alyssa Patt, Jennifer Canner, David Young, Michael Redisch, Josh Jacobs, Jerrod Roth and Jeff Gutman. The girls volleyball team includes Gennifer Bertin, Jen- nifer Madvin, Sarah Patt, Lisa Skeegan, Erica Gilman, Amy Kelman, Jody Reimer, Leah Trahey and Stacey Young. Stuart Gottesman's rac- quetball team has three play- ers who are previous medalists. Aaron Kobernick, Howard Kaye and Mark Selik comprise the Detroit team. There are 14 girls on Larry Harwin's soccer team. He says the girls have never played together and there is a wide range of skill levels, but they expect to work hard as a team in Baltimore. The team includes Cari Aronoff, Haley Berger, Michelle Berris, Jody Ehrlich, Jennifer Gruber, Julie Harwin, Marla Herman, Lauren Kippleman, Susan Kovsky, Jackie Lesh- man, Dana Resnick, Mered- ith Rice, Julie Sachs and Julie Winnick. The girls softball team lacks an experienced fast- pitch pitcher, but several vet- erans have stepped in to fill the position. Coach Tony Spokojny says the team will need a good mix of speed, power and defense to be com- petitive in Baltimore. He is assisted by Lisa Slovis and Karen Sklar. The players are Jessica Al- ter, Niki Berlin, Erin Bremen, Carey Chicorel, Emily Fried- man, Kim Geller, Aubrey Kepes, Heather Meyers, A.J. Rosenzweig, Elyssa Schram, Abbie Schwartzberg, Rachel Seligson and Robyn Stern. The swim team is led by a veteran coach, Herb Bern- stein, and several veteran swimmers besides Heather Rosenberg. The team includes Jeremy Bloom, Steve Bock- nek, Lani Buck, Karyn Iden, Jeremy Fogel, Aaron Freilich, Laura Hamburger, Ron Lit- THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 63
