WHAT ARE

FORT

Euphrates River. Actually,
those borders were never
fulfilled. Still, this was the
ideal of the physical features
of Canaan, different from the
Egyptian flatland in that Ca-
naan possessed many hills,
valleys, and rivers.
The land of Canaan was to
become the land-bridge con-
necting two major cultural
and political centers of the
ancient near East, Egypt to
the South and West and
Mesopotamia to the North
and East, separated by the
impassable Arabian Desert.
Armies crossed these roads
again and again in ancient
history, fought against each
other and in the process both
the cultural and religious in-
fluences from the North and
South were absorbed by the
people of Israel. Ultimately,
however, it was the special
idea that the people of Israel
possessed Canaan as a gift
from God. On this note of pro-
mise and vision, the second
discourse of Moses reaches its
conclusion. .111
