BIRMINGHAM CHRYSLER PLYMOUTH
DECLARES THAT SUMMER HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN.
Now is the time to buy or lease a
Lebaron Convertible.

cedure, calling for a more
careful scrutiny of the finan-
cial status of families re-
questing aid.
In an attempt to deal with
its money problems, includ-
ing a projected $1 million
debt if major changes were
not made, Beth Yehudah has
eliminated 14 personnel po-
sitions. Tuition this year is
expected to cover 50 percent
of the school's annual ex-
penses. Last year, tuition cov-
ered about 30 percent of
expenses.
Beth Yehudah also is ex-
pected to increase by two or
three its number of Russian
students from the 1991-92
figure of 28.
About 80 percent of the
students at the Lubavitch
cheder are on scholarship, ac-
cording to director Rabbi
Bentzion Stein. Much of the
money to operate the school
comes through fund-raising
and donations.
Russian students study
separately at an afternoon
school in Oak Park, headed
by Rabbi Elimelech Silber-
berg. Forty-three Russian
students attend the school,
with 15 teen-agers enrolled
in Lubavitch's high school tu-
torial program. None are
charged tuition.
Last year, Lubavitch also
opened a day school in Flint,
which has about 25 stu-
dents. ❑

Rally Heralds
New Freedom

New York (JTA) — After
70 years of religious in-
tolerance under commu-
nism, the Jews of the former
Soviet Union are free to ex-
press their Judaism. For
some of Moscow's Jews, this
freedom signals the coming
of the Messiah.
About 400 Jews gathered
in Red Square on July 30 to
attend a march and a rally
c> "to bring an awareness of
the imminent coming of
Mashiach to the broad
masses," said Rabbi Shmuel
Butman, chairman of the
International Campaign to
Bring Mashiach, a Lubavit-
ch organization in New
York.
The Mashiach Campaign,
founded last year to hasten
the coming of the Messiah,
)rganized the event in a
joint effort with Lishkas
Ezras Achim, a Jewish
group that has been active in
the former Soviet Union.
