M

aurice Freed was
barely under way on
his 400-mile odyssey
last weekend when he got
lost. Then his bicycle had a
flat tire. And that was just the
beginning of his problems.
He drove alone for much of
the first 12 hours of the
26-hour marathon, without
his support team, West
Bloomfield Township, because
a motorcycle broke down and
it had to be retrieved by the
team driving the recreation
department van.
He had to change his route
several times because of road
construction projects which
covered nearly a fourth of his
course.
He had to ward off the chill
of an unseasonably cold
August morning in
mid-Michigan.
He had to deal with radio
communication problems in
the support van. He had to ig-
nore a painful right knee. He
had to take a nap, so he just
laid down by the side of the
road and caught a few winks.
Freed's bike ride from
Mackinaw City, down the
western coast of Michigan
and across the state to the
site of the proposed West
Bloomfield Township Recrea-
tion Activities Center didn't
go exactly as planned.
But Freed did live up to his
pledge: He finished the
marathon journey.
Freed, 37, a township
recreation commissioner, had
planned to circle the state in
a 1,000-mile ride over a
minimum three-day period in
June.
But when he didn't garner
enough contributions for the
building of the Recreation
Center to make the trip worth
his while and substantially
cover an expected $4,000 in
expenses, Freed decided to
delay the event until August.
He also decided to shorten
his journey to 400 miles and
24 hours, which kept ex-
penses to about $200. As it
turned out, he needed a little
more than 26 hours to finish
the route.
The purpose of the ride also
changed in the two months.
Instead of trying to raise
thousands of dollars for the
Recreation Center, Freed
became more concerned about
increasing public awareness
for the facility while
generating less funds than
his original goal.
"Thanks to my 'stupid'

athletic skill, I've done my
part to hopefully let people in
our township learn about the
Recreation Center," Freed
said Sunday, just a few hours
after arriving at 10:40 a.m. at
the West Bloomfield police
station. The station is across
the street from the Recreation
Center site.
"I didn't do this event to
establish a record," Freed
added. "What I wanted to do
was stage a newsworthy event
to attract attention for the
Recreation Center. Now, it's
up to the commun i ty to get
together and raise 1,11e money
to build this much-needed
facility so we don't have to use
tax money."
It's estimated that tl-r,
Recreation Center will cost
about $6 million. The first
phase, however, which will if - -
dude a multi-purpose center
and offices, will run between
$1.4 and $1.7 million. Freed

said about $800,000 has bee
raised so far.
Freed, an accomplish6
long-distance cyclist, also -
rower, a marathon runii.F :-
who has competed in the
Boston Marathon, and a cross
country skier who's a member
of the Nordic Ski Patrol. So
last weekend's feat wasn't
unusual for him.
"If the motorcycle hadi''
broken down, it would ha.
been an extremely ea41
event," insisted Freed, a
graduate of Farmington Har-
rison High School. "I had t
ride the first 12 hours, son-i
230 miles, without a supp'
team, which meant I did`'
have food and other thine'
needed.

road to make phone cal'

have made it in 24 hours
without the interruptions.",
Freed began his journey
Mackinaw City at 8:30 a.m.
Saturday. Within the first
miles of: the trip, he became
lost and.,- he went four miles
out of di way on C-81.
