hirty-eight Detroiters
had their hearts,
minds and vocabulary
expanded on the Hatikva
Summer Singles Mission,
sponsored nationally by the
United Jewish Appeal and
locally by the Jewish Federa-
tion of Metropolitan Detroit.
The trip included sight-
seeing, learning and socializ-
ing with 425 singles from
other Jewish communities
throughout the United
States.
"I was so totally amazed
with the country that I can
hardly put it into words, but
I'll try" said Donna Fried-
man, who had never been to
Israel. "It was a phenomenal
trip that got better every day
we were there. Every time we
turned around, there was
some bit of history staring us
in the face."
Just being in Israel's
capital made a strong impact
on Brian Giles of Southfield.
"Jerusalem really made it all
sink in. The mission enabled
us to learn about our heritage
and history, to see the places
and be at the places we
studied about while growing
up," he said. But the biggest
highlight for Mr. Giles was
participating in a bar mitz-
vah ceremony on Masada.
On Friday evening, the en-
tire group went to the
Western Wall for Shabbat.
"What stands out the most
about Israel is the Western
Wall and realizing that we
were there with Jewish peo-
ple from all over the world,
congregating on Shabbat,"
said Alan Kovan of
Southfield.
"When we got to
Jerusalem, we all went to the

,

Southern Wall, which was,
opened to the public in the
last few years. All the women
lit Shabbat candles and the
men gave us each a rose," said
Eden Gross of Farmington
Hills. "You would think that
425 was a lot of people, but it
was just like a family on the
Sabbath," she said.

The itinerary included tour-
ing Israel's northernmost set-
tlement, Kibbutz Misgav Am,
to hear about Israel's securi-
ty needs while viewing
Lebanon over the shoulder of
the speaker. The group als
visited the Yad Vashem Holo-
caust Memorial, met with
Ethiopian immigrants at ab-
sorption centers and planted
trees in a national forest with
refugee children from
Yugoslavia's civil war.
The 10-day trip also includ-
ed visits to Detroit's Project
Renewal sister city of Yavne,
kibbutzim, an Israel Defense
Forces base and a gravesite
tour of the burial places of
Theodore Herzl and Gold
Meir. The mission also took
participants hiking at
Makhetsch Ramon, Israel's
equivalent of the Grand
Canyon.
Local participants in the
mission pledged $23,866 fo
the 1993 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, an increase of $18,275
from the same donors in 1992.
The mission also was a
source of inspiration for its
participants' increased in-
volvement.
Singles missions take place
throughout the year. For in-
formation, call Rick Krosnick
at the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit,
642-4260.

Nathaniel Warshay is a
public relations associate at
the Jewish Federation.
